well this bike used to be my friends first bike until he blew the engine then left it in his garden under a tree in bits for about 2 years. when i eventually rescued it, (swapped it for a gpx) she was in a bit of a state, so i stripped everything cleaned and polished or repainted it all and started putting it back together. didnt get any pics before unfortunatly, should have but got carried away!

heres the rebuilt and repainted frame the swingarm was silver origonally but i think this is better. polished the fork lowers wheel rims and other bits n bobs and started the rebuild! the calipers were the first thing as they were virtually siezed, so they got stripped cleaned and rebuilt and bolted to the other shiney bits!

popped up to birmingham to get a replacement engine, which turned out to be an entire bike, kind of presented a problem as it wasnt going to fit in the boot, especially with a passenger, and a zx9r engine (another on going zxr750 project) so my mind skipped to destruction preety quick, 20 seconds later i had a borrowed grinder, 1 minute later it was in 2 bits!

next on the list is to take the xj600 apart and see what other bits are salvageable!

I'm going to come across as a right yoghurt top here but I have 2 questions:

1. What the hell is that bike anyways?

and

2. How easy would it be to fit a 9R engine in the 7R Laughing

well the bike im doing up is a yamaha radian YX600 and the one i cut in half is an XJ600 (same engine but with an oil cooler and differant gear ratios)

and the zx9r engine conversion on a zxr j/k/l/m is ridiculously easy, on the zx7r its a fraction harder, aparently (dont know why!) but you can get a conversion kit from the states that makes it easy, also i think you have to change the exhaust, and carbs on the 7r as it uses a differant port spacing to the others Thumbs Up

Strange looking bike if I may be so bold.

yup thats the charlie, is a bit odd looking but its an american/canadian only bike i think. On the one occasion i rode it before my friend blew it up it was utterly terrifying! pegs/ center stand ground out really fast and if you corner at more than 40mph it shakes its head around like a rabid pit bull. but i couldnt let it rot away in his garden now could i Wink on the plus side it was very comfy, and ive never seen another one, (other than on the net that is)

Looking like a good start Thumbs Up

Sold mine last year. Nice little bike but looked like a pimple on my arse! Mr. Green

In the end I realised it was a bit too small for me

God knows how your mate managed to kill it, mine seemed indestructible.

Switched my light for a round one, the original was damaged. Tried the twin lights but they were a drain on the battery and I kept having to bump start it.

edit: swap the headrace bearing for the tapered ones, same as the 535 virago - mine was quit skittish and would start to tank slap without a firm grip of the bars

Is the swinging arm on the XJ the same as the radian?

I've been looking for a radian swing arm for ages in the UK for my XS650 street tracker project, can't ever seem to find them...

If I had to put money on it I'd say no, I seem to remember when looking at an XJ6 as a parts bike it seemed like the engine was really the only compatible part

Log onto the yahoo groups, they might be able to help in more detail

nope xj uses a mono shock, and disk brake rear, unlike the radians twin shock and drum brake, so same dimensions, but differant fittings

Be aware that the XJ600 uses two slightly different engines. I think the whole lump fixs the same, but the internal parts are quite different.

I bought a spare lump to swap the head with my XJ, and the head was sufficiently different to halt progress.

Swapping the whole engine was fine though.

Looks like a nice project there mate.

well started stripping the xj down... and the feckin thing is annoying me allready! ALL the exhuast clamps are siezed to the head, 2 of the studs snapped, and i bent the down pipes trying to 'jiggle' them loose, oh and i dropped the whole thing on my foot Evil or Very Mad begining to think i should have just spunked more cash on an engine from a breaker that was allready removed and definatly worked....

Keep looking mate. I bought an XJ engine off eBay for £30, good enough condition.
