Restrictor Kits.

Hey all. Will be taking my test soon and I am currently looking at different bikes to get. I have my mind set on either a second hand GSXR 600 or a new CBR600 RR (oh the happy dreams). Anyway, both these bikes will be useless to me unless I can find restrictor kits for them. This is kind of one of the downfalls of being under 21. Obviously I would need to get it down the learner legal 33.3 bhp but I can't find the kits anywhere!

Does anybody know where I might find a kit for either bike? I would prefer the CBR600 RR purely because I can describe it as "sex on wheels"!

It seems that they have kits for the gixxer but not the RR. They have them for 600 F and F Sport but not the RR Sad

Anybody know if they are available??

The kits are made by FI International and on their website they have lisitings of all bikes that they are available for. You can also call them on 01424 215444 to find out if they do a kit for a certain bike.

The kits have to be fitted by an approved garage, speak to your local shop about it and they'll either be able to do it or tell you where near to you can do it. Thumbs Up

I think I am going to go for a 98 GSXR as you seem to be able to pick them up in fairly good condition for around £3, 500. Which is quite a bit cheaper than a new 600RR which I openly admit is probably a little to sporty for my beer gut. Maybe I should get a Harley Wink

Anyway thanks for that. Now to get my test out of the way and get shut of my 'ickle Yamaha RS-X 100!

Worth knowing that insurance companies don't give you a reduction on insurance because it is 33bhp, they still class it as a 100bhp bike. Some will ask for proof of restriction others won't, the police can ask you for it and your insurance could well ask for it in the event of a clai. If you're planning on keeping it 33bhp for the 3 years you'd be much better off getting a bike closer to 33bhp than a 600 sports bike (and insurance will be less). You can get 33bhp as standard bikes and something arond 50bhp will take the restriction much better. However if the looks and tart factor are worth it to you get a 600 and 33bhp it.

Thanks Ste for that advice. I really didn't think of the insurance side of it. My amazing briliant plan was to buy the a 600 and keep it for FIVE years. That way, after the restriction period was over I would be on a bike that I (hopefully) felt "safe" with. So I wouldn't be jumping on to a full powered bike that I didn't know about (engine performance, brakes, suspension etc) There are so many different views on this but I guess at the end of the day it depends on the person.

If you are a complete idiot you will ignore all the advice you get or (this is me) you will take notice of people that know what they are talking about and end up having many years of biking fun!

And since we are on the subject, I have also been recomended by the guys at my local training school that GPZ500's and Fazer 600's are good bikes for beginners. Would you agree with this??

I know I am pushing my way into big bike territory but I feel it is a good plan, I have been on CBT for almost 2 years Sad

and have been told by 2 bike instructors, 1 ex-instructor and my Dad that they are all pleased with my standard of riding. Another reason for this is that I hope to in a few years to become a bike instructor.

Nothing wrong with taking that as your step into big bikes, and two years on your CBT and 125's is quite a long time.

When a bike has a 33bhp kit fitted to it, it is a totally different bike as the whole way you decide how you ride a bike is based mainly on it's engine power, so other than the brakes and controls it will be different with a 33bhp kit in.

Okay two first bikes, lots of other similar bikes to consider as well though.

I agree they are nicer than a car, but other than the tart factor you won't get anything from a big bike restricted to 33bp than a closer to 33bhp bike will offer other than the extra insurance cost. Neutral

insurance will be 2 grand for a sports 600 and 1 grand for a sports 400. Just a heads up before everyone starts thinking oo that r6 look nice, i wonder if it will take the restriction well... Rolling Eyes

before you go spunking your cash, FI won't supply restrictor kits for some imports, had a guy try and order one the other day for a canadian GSXR600 imported into the uk and they wouldn't supply one for a bike that has come from a market they haven't tested

To answer biker babes recent question..as far as I know even a 1240 Harley wont need a restrictor kit as standard as the big motor only makes 25KW and seeing as there is no restriction on torque no problem. The 884 will deffo not need a restrictor fitting as it's below the 33bhp limit anyhow and no fear of it exeeding the power to weight ratio like a deristricted mito or RS125 as thems made from Iron not alloy Wink
