Right-O,

I MAY be offered a job in my local Currys store tonight in the warehouse. It's a temporary job until mid January but as one of the permanent warehouse staff has just left there is 1 opening for a new warehouse person after christmas.

I currently work in a warehouse of a local courier firm. I am on £5.15 an hour and usually do 32 hours a week which means I take home about £155 a week. I work 5am untill 11am which is a bit crap as I'm not really a morning person. Currys are offering £5.52 an hour and as many hours as I can handle starting no earlier than 7am.

IF I get offered this job in currys I feel it'll be better for me as I'm not really enjoying my current job because of the people I work with and the early starts and with Currys paying better it'd definitely help. The only thing that's stopping me from saying yes straight away is it's not guaranteed to be me that will fill the permanent warehouse vacancy. If I got it I'd work as hard as I could and work as many hours as I could to prove my worth and hopefully get the position but I'm not so sure It's a great move.

To be honest I'm erring more on the side of taking the job if I get offered it but there's just the worry of being out of a job in January. I'm just after some other opinions really, anything anyone says will help Smile

Well no one can make up your mind you know you could be jobless in January. I worked for curry's I havnt a good word to say about the one i worked in either. Dont count on them taking you on as they do only need Christmas help more likely.

Be be a bit mad to give up a full time permanent job to take a chance with a temporary job would it not?even though you arnt happy its only a few pence more an hour but you will have it next year and time to look for something permanent.

watch for liars that say you will be permanent you always are on a trial period for 3 months so they use poeple this way for xmas as they have no obligation to keep the on after 3 months with their "trial period" at this time of year.

I realise it's a bit of a risk, but they have been advertising in the papers for permanent and part time staff so I know they must have permanent jobs or surely they wouldn't advertise for them. I guess what it comes down to is if I think I could prove myself enough for the permanent job, I know it's impossible to say but I could only try I guess!

I'm itching to get out of my current job as it's a bit pants and I've already had to turn a few jobs down because they said there's definitely no chance of a job after xmas but the manager at Currys today said there are also some sales opportunities available as they have been beating targets for about 6 months so are about to expand their permanent workforce a little.

Really hope it works out for you and you get permanent there Thumbs Up

If your in the stock room least you wont be getting commission, is not as great as it sounds with the bitching and backstabbing sales staff do and the chewing managers give for no cover plans sold. Commission is evil i think.

so when do you start?

£5.15/h how old are you the min wage is £5.52 for over 21s

oh and post tax it'll be erm 24p more an hour!,

in April it'll be alot worse, though due to the tax hike (dressed up as a tax cut but in reality is a tax hike)

I'm 21, 22 in October.

The attraction of this job is that I can get a lot more hours, my current job doesn't have any more hours to give me so 32 is the maximum I can get there whereas I can work as much as I like at Currys Thumbs Up

24p over 40 hours is an extra £10 so that's another tankful for the bike Thumbs Up This job is closer than my current one aswell so I'll be spending less on petrol anyway Very Happy

Umm, what's happening in April?

April 6th the 10% band of tax is gone ,

so thus :

somebody who earned 7K , got 5300 tax free and on the 1700ish paid 10% + 11% NI, 22% right?

After April 5th somebody who earns 7K will get 5400 tax free on the 1700 they will pay 31% tax (11% NI 20 % income tax) ie £527 vs £357 under the old system a hike of effectively 50% ,

which effectively means in this Labour world of ours the less you earn the more tax you pay as a % of your earnings!.
