I'm all for breastfeeding, there seems to be clear evidence that it's better for the baby. The government also think that people should be breastfeeding and have been promoting it very strongly at pre-natal courses ( I've been to one ).

On Thursday I read that the government are BANNING milk formula ads for babies under 6 months and there will be tight restrictions on ads for babies over 6 months. For fucks sake!

Fucking typical, isn't it? Fucking really boiled my piss this one.

Now, now, listen up! You lot are obviously much too thick to make the correct decision, so we are sweeping the evil milk formula under the carpet, where none of you horrible lot will find it. How ridiculous. Christ, I expect they'll be sticking a tax on the stuff next, it's for the children's sake, of course.

Children can and do grow up perfectly normally on this stuff. What a bunch of cunts. How will it make a mother who can't breastfeed feel, being told all of this in pre-natal courses and then finding out she is not doing the best for her baby. Jesus. And if a mother CAN breastfeed and chooses not to, that is entirely up to her, she should not be stigmatised for making that choice. Christ, it's like living in a nightmare this country.

Funny you'd mention that. My sister in law, by marriage, has decided that she doesn't want to breast-feed as it's too much of an inconvenience and formula is just so easy. As has an admittedly semi-retarded (not really) friend of my ex, for the same reasons. Obviously, neither of them are too bright and probably won't be producing the next Albert Einstein, but I still feel that they're making the wrong decision and that feeding infants formula by choice isn't much different than sipping whiskey while little Jimmy suckles.

Yeah, like anything will change next election. Somehow, magically, labour will get into power again.

Then they'll decide motorbikes are too dangerous, and ban that for our health, along with alcohol in pubs and clubs. Rolling Eyes

Actually, I agree with Harold's rant.
It really is ridiculous that they are being a nanny state about this.

I was all for breastfeeding my daughter when she was tiny, we bought all the kit for expressing, etc., and I went through the whole tiresome leaky tits and wet-clothing fiasco of trying to breastfeed ... and was then quite mortified to find that these huge bazongas I was god-given were not producing enough milk, and that she was not thriving.

So more for men's enjoyment than childrens, obviously.

But after about three weeks, the GP suggested that I really did need to put her on full-time bottle milk, which made me feel like a not-adequate mother. But at least it was there when we needed to ensure that she got enough nutrition.

Yes, breast is best for a start, and I understand that the government is simply trying to ensure that mothers aren't overfeeding their babies with over-strength milk, creating a nation of fat lazy bastards, but there IS a real need for new mothers to have access to (reasonably priced and untaxed) formula milk, simply because even the best-equipped mother in the world isn't always able physically to provide what her baby needs.

Its ridiculous that instead of more education about how much, what type, and how often to feed babies, the government decides in true nanny state fashion that it is better to remove the choice from mothers, who all those stuffed suits sitting on their fat arses in Whitehall, think that women of this generation are not capable of being educated to make informed decisions about the welfare of their children.

Nice rant, H Thumbs Up

"Whenever the country gets signed over to the EU all of the local parties will abolished anyway and replaced with european wide parties instead." - SoND

The last treaty will be signed in the summer of 2008 and we subsumed into Europe on January 1st 2009. You're right, there will be no need to stage any more elections, no need for parliament, no need for your local MP etc. Europe will have the power to close parliament Sad Europe will be all powerful. (Sound familiar?)
Thats why we now have regions, thats why the army regiments were broken up, maybe thats why Brown decided not to have an election, in fact maybe he never had any plans for an election and it was all a hoax just to keep us on a string and prevent us from thinking about the real issues. Consider this, we give Europe £48million per day and get only £3million back, but when people see a sign saying "This project was funded by the EU", they receive a positive message about the EU. Think about it.

Regards

PS As for breast-feeding, didn't do my boys any harm.

Cant be arsed actually researching it as ive just researched a rather tedious essay on phytoplankton bloom fertilisation Crying or Very sad

But i was always under the impression breastmilk helped the babies immune system does to antibodies being passed over, or something very similar. Or perhaps it was gut bacteria. Not 100% certain but it was something important enough to remember thinking i would always advocate breastfeeding for the first 6 months.

And this coming from a man who is terrified of being stuck married to a woman with saggy tits Wink.

As stewy once said, 'back off fat man. The boobs are mine. After i am done you may have the shrivelled remains' or words to that effect. I've seen what bitty does to a previously lovely set Crying or Very sad

Having been on both sides (having breastfed and not managed, and then managed) I agree with this policy. The rate of breastfeeding in this country is appalling, and frankly anything that does anything to help is a good thing. A HUGE amount of young mums don't even consider it, whereas it should be the norm that people do and then look into alternatives if it doesn't work.

Breastfeeding isn't the norm- bottlefeeding is, and we should be turning that around.

Only 32% of women in Wolverhampton breastfeed... Clearly giving women the choice in this area isn't promoting breastfeeding sufficiently!

Isnt there a lot of places that don't allow breast feeding in public?Remember a while ago there was a debate about it somewhere.

I breast-fed, for as long as I could stick it (10 weeks), but not in public (my choice). I sat in my car before shopping etc.

I don't mind seeing ladies do it in public (Im all for it if they have the confidence to do it), its just a nesc act and should be free for each individual to use as they will.

I heard somewhere that breastfeeding actually reduces the mothers chance of getting breast cancer. Not sure if this is accurate, but that incentive on top of health benefits for the baby must encourage women?

Incidently, I didn't find it that easy, it fucking hurts if you get it wrong. Also, the baby can use it as a comfort to fall asleep on, which meant that . . . (well for me) it got confusing to know if the baby was hungry or tired. Resulting in frustration.

Bottle is the lazy, easy, expensive option. But, for anyone-one who knows how exhausting those first few months are . . . . .

formula + rusk = more sleep for everyone at night time. But, then of course, you stop producing as much milk if you feed less breast.

Isn't it the first 3 months ideally. These motheres that do it for a year are insaine, there is no proof its adding any value.

World Health Organisation wrote:
Q: Up to what age can a baby stay well nourished by just being breastfed?

A: Infants should be exclusively breastfed – i.e. receive only breast milk – for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development and health. "Exclusive breastfeeding" is defined as giving no other food or drink – not even water – except breast milk. It does, however, allow the infant to receive drops and syrups (vitamins, minerals and medicines). Breast milk is the ideal food for the healthy growth and development of infants; breastfeeding is also an integral part of the reproductive process with important implications for the health of mothers.

WHO recommends that infants start receiving complementary foods at six months (180 days) of age in addition to breast milk.

World Health Organisation wrote:
Thereafter, to meet their evolving nutritional requirements, infants should receive nutritionally adequate and safe complementary foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond.

Someone in my office the other day said that formula milk is better than breast milk. I disagreed, not thinking it was that big a deal, I was surprised to find 5 people viciously turn on me with real venom, it was like I was questioning their parenting skills. Which i guess i was inadvertently

I mentioned anti-bodies in breast milk and that it was natural and not from powder. They focused on practical aspects like how long it took a baby to feed on breast milk. They also said that milk needs to be measured out and the baby cant consume as much as it likes. The general consensus was that i didnt have a baby so I knew nothing. I have since found out that the length of time it takes a baby to breast feed is a good thing, and that its just with formula milk that babies over feed.

I also mentioned that an ad with victoria beckam in it promoting formula milk, with pictures of a new born baby, had been banned, and they all got even more angry.

I think a lot is about convenience, and women thinking that breast feeding will make their breasts sag or something.

They also reckon that any studies comparing breast milk with formula milk, are for old style formula milk, and new formula is better than the real thing.

I reckon there must be a lot of sly promotions in womens magazines, with nothing promoting breast milk.

I reckon formula milk may be a big reason why so many people end up border line diabetic and overweight, as they have binge eating with formula milk which is a sudden burst of energy in a small space of time, instead of slow release feeding.

Unfortunatley in someplaces its not a choice its more like bullying by the health visitors and nursing staff. A friend of ours almost ended up being sectioned after staying off her anti depressants much longer than she should have done because of the pressure to breast feed.
