If I turn the radiator off will it drain itself? also is there a special way of removing them and/or worth the hassle to paint behind it and the radiator itself? would like to give it a good clean.

you didnt read jamie stokes post about his dad doing just that then?
to remove a radiator you have to drain the whole system, you can get rollers to paint behind them and if the radiator isnt too bad you can lightly sand, prime and repaint with a decent radiator paint,

No you don't.

To get behind...

Turn off both valves at the radiator.
Get something large and flat ( large books etc ) that is the same height as the inlets.
Slightly undo the large nuts at either side. Might be a wee bit of water, so towels just below them.
Carefully lift the radiator off the wall hangers and let it come towards the floor, keeping it level.
It will now be face down on the large books, do up the nuts. Thumbs Up

Easier to do with 2 people. Pull back the carpet and turn off the taps. Undo the large nuts quickly and put your thumb over the hole, the other person is doing the same.
Between you turn the radiator over so the holes are at the top. Manhandle the bugger to the grid and tip out.

I earned my central heating engineers qualification the hard way last january. Lying in bed and the missus shouts that the bathroom radiator is leaking onto the cream carpet. bugger.

Out of bed in the kegs, pull the crapet back, grab the tools and stare at it for a a bit. Turned off the valves and started to split the joint when I had a wave of genius. Re-tightened, opened valves, headed downstairs and drained a shitload out of the system. Jobs a good un. Back to bed!
