My fairly sensible 13yr old would like a gun for xmas to shoot targets with (mostly in the garage I think). I know a big fat zero about these things. Sensible suggestions for a good starting point? And to buy them. ta muchly

Your fairly sensible 13year old might just have a few far from sensible friends and no matter how good your son is he will want to show it off, In the hands of the wrong person do you fancy the consequences.

I would say wait till hes a lot older.

BB guns?

Me and my mates used to have BB guns when we were around that sort of age, we had 'wars' in his back garden which was stupidly fun. Just don't let him take it out of the house for obvious reasons seeing as a lot of those things look pretty real. You can get decent pistols for £30 - £40.

probably stopping trigger happy cops executing no sorry shooting innocent people.

Of course I'd recomend against guns even BB guns , police bear no responsibility for shooting innocents, (even if they are found to be holding a table leg and the bullet wounds are in the back of their head which contracdicts the he raised hius 'shotgun' at us story).

good luck finding .175 rounds jamie Very Happy
you can pick up a .177 air gun for about £30 off the web.
search for surplusstore on google.
they dont have much power at all... i think at most it will go through a plate or 2, if that! the only thing you need to watch out for is ricochet shots, but unless they go in your eye, they dont do anything.

You can easily increase the power by replacing the spring with something a bit stouter. My step dad had one that would put a hole thru a milk bottle at 200ft after he fitted it with Caterpillar valve springs... Wink

That's a retarded answer sorry.

At the age of 12 I was shooting everything up to semi automatic assault rifles, in particular FN FAL's if you want to google them. We waited till I was 13 before I tried a full auto Bren gun.

QoS

Well done on not being a reactionary parent trying to wrap her child in cotton wool.

I couldn't recommend you an air rifle for your son but I would recommend you spend a bit of the money on getting a gun safe and bolting it to the wall in the garage so the air gun/rifle can be secured when not in use. Although not a legal requirement I've always felt any responsible gun owner would use one.

Maybe go for a rifle styled one than a small handgun styled BB gun. Less likely he'll be able to slip it into his bag and take it into school to show off.

There are beginner rifles you can get that fire bb's so are great for plinking in the garage.

well its not going to happen now with the '97 gun ban is it? , I remember going to Matlock with me dad when he used to go shooting regularly though that gun club is gone and was terrible irresponsible and let me (about 7 or 8 at the time) handle guns I distinctly remember a magnum being a really really heavy pull

Sadly no it isn't.

We have some of the most draconian gun laws in the civilised world and one of the highest gun crime rates. every year since the various bans the gun crime rate has risen due to the presence of illegal firearms coming in from eastern europe.

What's the point of having a ban on various weapons when they are freely available to anyone who boards a ferry to holland or France?

I would like to see a return to the licensing of Semi auto rifles and pistols and strict licensing at that. Until that day comes and I believe it will in time all owners of Air guns should keep their weapons under lock and key.

Retarded answer or not

I'm sure there are a lot of children at that age more than sensible enough to use a gun in the manner it was bought for but that doesn't go for all.

Most young teenage lads wouldn't be able to help themselves in showing it off no matter how innocently. It's their friends that might be stupid enough to load it and swing it about like an idiot and end up killing/injuring someone.

It's not just the one child in question you have to think "is he responsible enough " its who ever is going to be egging him on to look at it and have a go with it, and they will.

My son at 13 is sensible enough but I know for a fact one or two of his friends can barely wipe their back sides never mind a look but don't touch policy I would insist on.

When I was 13/14 me and my mates all had BB guns.

Quite often we used to go to the local fields and have a "Deathmatch" BB event. No-one got seriously hurt and it was bloody good fun.

Just like when we chucked a huge french banger down a badger hole.

Having done a bit of digging it seems there are issues with air rifles and 50m from a road and stuff. Will continue looking down the bb route, and thinking of ways of stopping it leaving the house without my knowledge. Thanks for everyone's input it was helpful.

The Headlines

From the 1st of October 2007 it will be illegal to sell, manufacture or import realistic imitation firearms within the UK.

Furthermore, selling an imitation firearm to, or the purchase of an imitation firearm by, anyone under the age of 18 years is illegal under Section 40 of the Act. Contravening this is a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment, a fine or both. In blunt terms it will not be legal to sell imitation firearms (of which realistic imitation firearms should be seen as a sub-set) to anyone under 18.

A realistic imitation firearm is defined thus in the Act:

38 Meaning of “realistic imitation firearm”
(1) In sections 36 and 37 “realistic imitation firearm” means an imitation firearm which—
(a) has an appearance that is so realistic as to make it indistinguishable, for all practical purposes, from a real firearm; and
(b)is neither a de-activated firearm nor itself an antique.
(2) For the purposes of this section, an imitation firearm is not (except by virtue of subsection (3) to be regarded as distinguishable from a real firearm for any practical purpose if it could be so distinguished only—
(a) by an expert;
(b)on a close examination; or
(c) as a result of an attempt to load or to fire it.
(3) In determining for the purposes of this section whether an imitation firearm is distinguishable from a real firearm—
(a) the matters that must be taken into account include any differences between the size, shape and principal colour of the imitation firearm and the size, shape and colour in which the real firearm is manufactured; and
(b) the imitation is to be regarded as distinguishable if its size, shape or principal colour is unrealistic for a real firearm.

The Statutory instrument entitled “arms and ammunition” which includes the Defence says the following about ‘unrealistic imitation firearms’

Response to Draft Regulations
relating to
sections 36, 37 and 38 of the VCRA 2006

Another vote for the cadets, I was in the air cadets and got to fly planes/gliders, shoot guns .22 and 5.56, and go to different countries (germany/scotland). It is dirt cheap £1 a week getting him off the streets keeps him fit get him new friends etc.

I had an amazing time and would reconmend it to anyone. But not the sea cadets, they were gay.

So be a responsible parent and lock it up in a safe.

Having to be responsible yourself should not be the limiting factor to your childs growth.

One of the most useful things to come out of this thread for me, is being reminded to think about the control of anything I might buy. I hadn't considered the idea that it might get sneaked into school or out of the house. So thanks for that people. I think having it locked securely under my control and available to him on request is a great plan and will help him to see that it's a fun item but it comes with responsibilities. Tbh I'm looking forward to having a go myself as is Teaman I think Cool . I'm liking the fact I can buy him something I would also like for myself, how often do we do that ? LOL.

And whose the daddy is correct I have had a christmas aardvark all year. aardvarks are for life not just for xmas Very Happy. At home I refuse to start xmas until about the 19th December.

But if it's locked up how are you supposed to use it? (that doesn't mean no gun cabinet either, because if you have a gun then yes you need to lock it away when not in use) what I am trying to say is that it's all very well to be a responsible parent and a child to be sensible but you have to think of others around you to, Are they responsible are they sensible.

I think QfoS realises that from what was said in last post,

He will get egged on to show it off if its not controlled and kids being kids no matter how grownup will always give in to pear pressure unless guided all the way.

I am not against guns as such just puting them in the hands of the wrong people.

Meh, get him one of the see-through ones and let him go mad. Plastic BB's dont hurt in the slightest unless you have gas powered ones.

Locking it up will completely kill the fun from it. Completely.
