whosthedaddy where are you?

How do you go about getting a monkey bike on the road, If I bought a new one like this then it seems its just a case of registering it with the DVLA? but what happens if I buy one from ebay? I guess I need an SVA and then registration?

Anyone experience of this and likely costs?

If you read the info on the site it says you do not need an sva test....

Skyteam Rocket ST110 Road Legal Monkey Bike

Not to be confused with the 50cc - this is the 110cc rocket model!

All our Road Legal Monkey Bikes come with a Certificate of Conformity: If you choose to register your bike for road use, now or at a future date, we will give you your monkey bike a Certificate of Conformity. The Certificate of Conformity proves that your monkey bike has European Whole Vehicle Type Approval, which means that your monkey bike is road legal in the EU and can be registered without any further tests or modifications.

Single Vehicle Test: Because our Monkey Bikes come with a Certificate of Conformity, you do NOT need Single Vehicle Test, giving you peace of mind, and saving you £70 test fee and any modifications needed to pass the SVA test.

I can sniff out a Monkey thread from a mile away. Wink

The bike will arrive in a crate and will require the following to be put together:

Arrow Front wheel
Arrow Front brake pad
Arrow Handlebars (they just screw into the yoke risers)
Arrow Battery
Arrow Mirrors
Arrow Headlight

That'll keep you busy for an hour tops and then its sitting on the bike making all the appropriate noises in the living room watching TV waiting for the DVLA to do their thing.

The paperwork that comes with the bike will include:

Arrow Certificate of conformity
Arrow Other one
Arrow And another one. Laughing

Basically it states that the tax has been payed and that the bike is unregistered as well as not requiring an SVA inspection.

Complete the blanks for the V5 document and get on the blower for some insurance.

Without a Reg number you have to insure the frame number (last 6 digits) until it arrives and then just change the details over. My insurance TPO is just £12 pcm.

Best bet is to take the details to the local DVLA office and see the pretty young lady behind the desk and give her £15 for tax and £40 something for registration. If there are any problems a person can tell you if there something missing rather than waiting for Swansea to send it back weeks later.

This done a week later I had the reg number so off to get a plate made.

The 8.5litre tank will take less than a tenner to fill and off you go.

The bike does take a few miles to get sorted which is just as good as it takes this long to get used to riding it. The 2nd time out I uncontrollably wheelied it onto a busy roundabout. Laughing

I never really followed the breaking it in gently approach and its done me proud so far bar a little instance that needs fixing when the weathers better.

They are what they are, a cheap fun little bike. Thumbs Up

What sort of distance do you get out of a tank? how comfy are they to ride? anything else I need to know about them?

The reason Im asking all this is the bike club im in are planning next years charity run, John-O-Groats to Lands end on Monkey bikes (last year they raised 10k for Dr Kershaws Hospice by doing it on Honda C90's) I've gone and put my name down for it so now i need to find a monkey bike.

If you buy 2nd hand then get one thats all ready road legal and save a lot of headaches.

I think I filled up twice and got neigh on 500km. It runs on fumes or something mystical I'm telling ya. Laughing

JOGLE is one of the big runs that would be fun to do, but being a family man and a professional maybe not the best idea. Sad

The original monkey comes with twin shocks and a huge seat and is comfy as heck if not a little bouncy over the bumps. The front end is just as bumpy but nice on the hands as vibrations are kept to a minimum. The seat does vibrate a little and I can put my hand on my heart and say that the blokes G spot is up the arse and may be tickled by 4,500 revs in 4th. Wink

Its a small bike but I find the foot pegs to be in the right place and the arms are relaxed allowing you to bop along to the iPod and just take in the scenery.

The short gears and a single cylinder engine mean that you might as well leave it in 4th for all occasions.

40-50 tops is ideal for the town, but on the open roads from Scotland to Cornwall may be a little tiresome.
