whosthedaddy where are you?
How do you go about getting a monkey bike on the road, If I bought a new one like this then it seems its just a case of registering it with the DVLA? but what happens if I buy one from ebay? I guess I need an SVA and then registration?
Anyone experience of this and likely costs? ____________________ Yamaha RXS 100 > Gilera Runner 50 > Suzuki SV650SY |

I can sniff out a Monkey thread from a mile away.
The bike will arrive in a crate and will require the following to be put together:
Front wheel
Front brake pad
Handlebars (they just screw into the yoke risers)
Battery
Mirrors
Headlight
That'll keep you busy for an hour tops and then its sitting on the bike making all the appropriate noises in the living room watching TV waiting for the DVLA to do their thing.
The paperwork that comes with the bike will include:
Certificate of conformity
Other one
And another one.
Basically it states that the tax has been payed and that the bike is unregistered as well as not requiring an SVA inspection.
Complete the blanks for the V5 document and get on the blower for some insurance.
Without a Reg number you have to insure the frame number (last 6 digits) until it arrives and then just change the details over. My insurance TPO is just £12 pcm.
Best bet is to take the details to the local DVLA office and see the pretty young lady behind the desk and give her £15 for tax and £40 something for registration. If there are any problems a person can tell you if there something missing rather than waiting for Swansea to send it back weeks later.
This done a week later I had the reg number so off to get a plate made.
The 8.5litre tank will take less than a tenner to fill and off you go.
The bike does take a few miles to get sorted which is just as good as it takes this long to get used to riding it. The 2nd time out I uncontrollably wheelied it onto a busy roundabout.
I never really followed the breaking it in gently approach and its done me proud so far bar a little instance that needs fixing when the weathers better.
They are what they are, a cheap fun little bike. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |

If you buy 2nd hand then get one thats all ready road legal and save a lot of headaches.
I think I filled up twice and got neigh on 500km. It runs on fumes or something mystical I'm telling ya.
JOGLE is one of the big runs that would be fun to do, but being a family man and a professional maybe not the best idea.
The original monkey comes with twin shocks and a huge seat and is comfy as heck if not a little bouncy over the bumps. The front end is just as bumpy but nice on the hands as vibrations are kept to a minimum. The seat does vibrate a little and I can put my hand on my heart and say that the blokes G spot is up the arse and may be tickled by 4,500 revs in 4th.
Its a small bike but I find the foot pegs to be in the right place and the arms are relaxed allowing you to bop along to the iPod and just take in the scenery.
The short gears and a single cylinder engine mean that you might as well leave it in 4th for all occasions.
40-50 tops is ideal for the town, but on the open roads from Scotland to Cornwall may be a little tiresome. ____________________ Current : MSX 125 Past : CBR 900RR Monkeybike : c50 LAC : ZXR750 H2 : FZR600 : ZX7R P3 : YW100 : TRX850: Trophy 900 T309 : GSXR 600 L0: Monkeybike : XJ6S Whosthedaddy |
