...how would you tell the difference between a V twin and an inline 4 bike?

I know the above statement means that to ride it would be problematic but just humour me as I have no idea?

You could just slow down in a gear then they'd know they were pretty low in the rev range. Wink

The question being if you could see the bike and engine you'd know whether its a twin or IL4. To hear the engine you'd know whether its a twin or an IL4. Hence if you couldn't see it or hear the bike but just to 'ride' it how would you know the difference?

I've only ever been on IL4 and can maybe understand why people say that they are bettersuited for the track as they come alive at high revs and stupid speeds but is that the only difference, the low down grunt is better on a twin?

If, for some strange fantastical reason you could ride while blind and deaf....you would twist the throttle and a twin would take off, smoothly pulling (deceptively fast) all the way.


An inline four would be (I assume you have superhuman touch and feel, daredevil style) fairly gutless....and then after a few seconds or less with the throttle pinned youd be tugged forward like a small rocket had ignited on your back.



Or something to that effect. *shrugs*


An interesting thread spin off, the most inventive and funny (if it could be seen as funny...I might just be weird) ways you could become blind and deaf, yet still be allowed to drive/ride?

If we're talking same CC, okay actually twins tend to have very slightly better low down go, but not better midrange.
Better low down/midrange goes tends to be dependant on cc not the number of cylinders (and the intended purpose of the bike, of course.)

As far as the 'chugging' goes, you can often feel sports twins keblumping along as you open the throttle at low revs.

However, the obviously answer is 'the twin will be dog-slow' Wink Very Happy.

I commute on a zx6, but it doubles perfectly as an awesome hooning bike. Every day life with it is fantastic.


But I know people that for some reason would hate commuting on a '6 sports bike. *shrugs* Each to their own innit.

Same here but on the 7.

Just wondering if a twin would suit my riding style better. Test rides are needed!

Sounding like a broken record as ever…. It’s CC not, number of cylinders that is the major factor on ‘ease of use’.

What twins do offer is the impression of less of an increase in power as revs increase and relatively more midrange when compared to top end power; though I would suggest this is basically because the twins don’t revs as far. Given a twin and four of the same cc, they tend to have similar power curve up until the point the twin reaches it’s redline, at which point the four continues making more power.

For me, I’d take a highly-revvy bike for road fun, as it feels like I’m ‘working’ the bike a bit when I make an effort.
However, on track you should always be right at the top of the rev range in most cases, so it makes less of a difference what bike you’re on – on a twin you may loose out a bit less being at less revs, but it’s just a case of dropping back a bit more Smile.

Now try riding a very revvy 2 stroke of the same cc or different (something considered to 'difficult' to ride) and you'll probably find to ride at the same pace, you can ride pretty much exactly the same.
So, realistically (maybe not how it's perceived, as the bar is often lifted along with peak power) it'll be just as 'easy' to ride.

To be fair, higher up I did mention 'intended purpose of the bike' - so a mx bike is obviously going to be different to a sports bike... saying that, though, often gearing is the major difference.

Gear your ZXR to the same gearing as your monkey bike, then see how easy it is to pull away in top Smile.
