Track day question

Why do people always tape up their headlights at track days?

Ok seriously it's supposed to stop the glass shattering and flying everywhere if they smash. But that would only really count if they're glass.

Other lights though the reason is so people can't tell when you're braking.
It's offputting to see the person in front's brake lights pop up.

I think the main reason is it looks cool.

For a number of reasons I've been told;

1) So that in the event of an accident broken bits aren't left on the track

2) So as not to distract folk on the track (as most new bikes lights are permanently on)

People rarely cover the whole light. And if you did, the heat generated by the bulbs, and the insulation provided by the tape can completely muller your headlight lens.

If you want to knock out your headlight just pop out the fuse. Most photographers ask for that.

And on track a headlight behind you should make no difference because you're not looking behind you, unless you're on your arse.

When I binned it on track, the tape held together my glass headlight lense, so it does work Thumbs Up

I taped mine up fully with yellow tape to partially disguise the fact it had one. Thumbs Up

These days the plastic in lenses seems to be pretty similar to that which the fairing is made of, so there's a lot less point doing it than when you had metal bodywork and glass lenses.

Think they still insist you do it for competitive drag racing for some reason, though.

I took the fuses out for all my lights when I went for my trackday and merely used tape to disguise my lights.
