JUst finished my de-coking!

Hi all just thought i would say a big thank you to everyone that has posted up about de-coking your exhaust, i was reading through all the guides yesterday and thought i would give it a bash!

i went out today and bought some caustic soda and a funnel and started on my exhaust, i just put it all back together and i tell you what! its made such a difference to the bike, the arrow system is now nice and shiny and its stopped smoking so bad and sounds a lot better!

I would certainly recommend everyone does this its really worked for me!

Just make sure you give the bike a good thrashing to keep it clear so you don't need to de-coke it again for a while.

i got mine from Focus, it was £2.29 for 500g you only need half of this tho

mix half of the Caustic soda with a bucket of water
stir it around for a few mins
block 1 end of the exhaust with something (spuds are good)
pour in the caustic soda mix (funnel is good for this)
leave for about 2-3 hours
pour it out and rinse through with water
leave to dry and re-fit the exhaust
JOB DONE!

i didn't pour it into my end can tho i just tried to clean each end a bit.

don't forget to wear ya moms marigolds and some old clothes ooo and dont stir it up indoors i found it really harsh on my chest when breathing in and that was with the garage door open!

Please excuse me for being stoopid - but ill be able to do this with both the end can and expansion chamber / downpipe bits with damaging either part wont I.

Remember always add the caustic to the water a little bit at a time stirring inbetween.

Never add water to caustic unless you enjoy the sensation of having the skin chemically burned off your face and hands.

Even adding caustic to water generates a fairly large amount of heat. Enough to make it boil if you add the stuff too fast.

jam a spud over the silencer end, stand the exhaust upright and pour away, just fill the whole thing and get it all out. you will be suprised when you tip it out after a few hours just how much crap comes out of it. baffles will be fine, they can take it (mine did anyway)

There's different grades of caustic soda, the stronger ones require a license to sell (can get them often in hardware stores and chemists). You know if you've bought good stuff because you have to supply a reason for buying it before they will hand it over.

Buy some cheap goggles, they are only a couple of pounds from a hardware shop. I took a mate to a&e once before because he did what someone said before. Just dumped a load of water into a bucket that had the dry mix in and burnt a layer of skin off his face

When I did mine years ago I used a pear as they are a little softer than a potato and easier to 'mould' into the end thus making a water tight fit.

i put a mix of drain cleaners i found into my rear exhaust, i think it dissolved the wadding.
Sounds great now tho lol
