Bellinger criticized Italy for wanting to try Americans in absentia.

"It's ironic that the U.S. has been criticized for trying al-Qaeda detainees without their being present at their trial and yet Europeans seem to be comfortable to try American officials in absentia," he said.

I think there is a slight difference between the two. Something to do with choice?

The hypocrisy of government is staggering.

Also the USA has refused to extradite IRA terrorists in the past

I believe the americans called them "Freedom fighters".
Back in the 70's my uncle had to go to New York on business for the firm he worked for. Whilst he was there his host took him for a night out drinking in some irish bars where he had a collection tin for noraid rattled under his nose. He was told in no uncertain terms that if he didn't contribute to "the cause" a kicking would be on the cards.
With friends like that who needs enemies?

I've read stories of the IRA feeding an SAS man threw a chipper machine after they tortured him for hours. About 8 year back a pub we had just left found a nail bomb outside.

My mates dad, working for the RUC, picked the remains of his brother from a bomb on board a bus, and carried his other brother to the grave after he got shot.

I think any form of 'war' like fighting involves humans reducing themselves to the actions of animals. Ireland seen a lot of shit happen that was as brutual as anything that has been seen in Iraq (with the exception of suicide bombers, which in itself isn't a new phenomena).

The thing that always amused me though, was the worst form of punishment dished out in Ireland was to be exiled. Worst than a drill through the knee caps?

an old Phillip K Dick story had this , where in the near future prisons did not exist instead people were marked , and were treated as invisbile by everybody , as such they were ostracised completely for life, mugged beaten etc without consequence to the person who does the mugging and beating.

Probably a similar principle.
