Brake light

Hullo, I bought an old 'british style' (whatever that means) rear light... anyway when I got home I noticed it has only red and black wires!! aarrggghh I assume this means it won't work as a brake light!!!

Does this mean old 'british style' bikes had seperate tail lights and brake lights

erm... what sort of bulb goes in it? Pics?

Might be 2 wires IN and the chassis is the ground.....?

Depends how old we are talking about.
Before 1973 if it was below a 50cc and not cable of exceeding 30mph it did not need to have a break light.
Anything later or more powerful has to.
What bike are we talking about?

Could be the 'tube' out the rear is the ground?

If you remove the lens and bulb and see how many terminals it has in the holder it will tell you that. 2 terminals (and 2 pips on the bulb) means it's a stop & tail, 1 terminal/pip and it's either a stop or a tail.

I would say it ia a single filament bulb as the wires are black & red. If it was earthed through the chassis the black wire would be a different colour.

Just been and looked at the Ariel light for you , It has 2 wires coming from it and works as a brake light AND a rear light.
It has 3 bulbs , one brake light bulb and 2 rear light bulbs.
