Yes i know alot of people said not to do it, but i stubbied my can over the last few days and just put it onto my bike.
It sounds great and looks brilliant but i have one small problem...
It is kicking out white/blue smoke like it is warming up, even when it is warm. I take it means that there is incomplete combustion and i may have to change the fuel:air ratio
Can someone clarify my guess or tell me what is wrong? Yes i know i have been told by some not to do it in the first place, but i live and learn.
Thanks everyone for all your help so far.

I hope you mean you just stubbied the end can and haven't been chopping up the rest of it? That would be bad enough.
You do realise that 2-stroke exhaust dimensions are calculated by the bore, stroke and port timing of the engine rather than the quantity of fuel delivered by the carburettor? The length of the free portion after the 'double cone' is one of the critical measurements so you get the correct pattern of pressure waves inside the exhaust.
Your smoke is probably unburned/partially burned fuel coming out of the end of your exhaust that would ordinarily have been stuffed back into the engine by the pressure waves.
Since it's already done now and would be difficult to make longer again, I'd suggest fitting some sort of baffle in the end to slow the gas down a bit.
You can check your mixture by doing some plug chops. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

this doesnt sound as clever as stinkwheels answer and it may not be right but i would have guessed that its just because theres less end-can to "filter" the exhause gasses, i could be completly wrong but it makes sence to me
dont mean to hijack the topic but stinkwheels you dont have a 2 stroke shop in essex do you? i bought something off a guy on ebay by the same name???

I thought "stubby" cans were a four stroke thing As stinkwheels says, theres a lot of work goes into designing expansion chambers and I'm guessing that the end cans were specificaly made that size to run with the pipe. Once you start chopping them up and changing dimmensions you're risking severe damage to the motor. Four strokes are a bit more forgiving. |

Depends on the bike. An optimum 2-stroke exhaust has a fairly long 'stinger' on the end of it. The end-can replicates this effect and damps down some of the noise into the bargain.
The length of the stinger is quite important.
The bike on the following picture (Yamaha 500 engine) has an exhaust system designed for maximum power and nothing else. You can clearly see the stinger on it.
Now if it wasn't required or the bike would have gone faster with a shorter one, it wouldn't be there. That bike will run a 9.03 second standing 1/4 mile.

You done quite a good job there
..Just a shame about all the blue smoke!
Have you tried taking it to a garage to check out the mixture, and if anything can be done? Just seems a shame going through all the hassle off the mod, and not being able to use it! ____________________ BMW R1200GS & Honda Fireblade 929RR

Yeah i know, it just seems like whenever i get back from work its pitch black outside and freezing cold. That rear hugger is quite dirty to say the least... actually, i prefer the term "well used" |
