I think they should go Pole to Pole next. Up to the North Pole then down through Canada and South America.

Nooo, dont give them any ideas..
This one was bad enough, seems they rushed the whole thing. Just something about the whole series that washed over me.

Would have been so much better if they had started this in the Artic circle and come down through Norway or Sweeden and then into Europe. Would have been so much better rather than the lets introduce the EM clan to the world...

Try This for size then

Yeah agree totally. Long Way Round was brilliant. A real adventure especially in Mongolia and Siberia.
Long Way Down just wasn't the same. Seemed rushed and the Ewan / Charlie / Claudio relationship of mates on bikes having fun just wasn't there.

Nick Sanders is still pissed that the Guiness Book of Records closed the record after they took it off of him in 2002, especially as he beat them round the planet in 2004.

He runs groups alll over the developing world, he is a bout half way through taking a group round the world in stages at the moment.

Journey to...

I think one of the things that spoiled this one a bit was the number of interactions with the support trucks .

In LWR they were covering vast countries where you could ride for days, in some cases weeks without hitting a border, leading to much more campig and less meets with the trucks. In Africa its made up of lots of relatively small countries - in some cases they were crossing borders every 300 miles or so. Of course they could have got round this by carrying their own documentation etc, but I think with the tight timescales they set themselves the risk of losing documents would have balsed up the who itiinery.

I still enjoyed it, especially the 2nd half, but LWR was better.

Yeah, to be honest, the 1st half was shite.

Towards the end though I started to enjoy it once they'd stopped crying like little kids and actually were doing some cool stuff like seeing wildlife and visiting random villages etc.

Charlie Boorman - Paris Dakar

Although if memory serves he came off quite early and shattered both his hands

and then he goes and does this after recovering... Smile

I have been disappointed. In comparison to LWR is was poop. Too rushed, too little of the bikes and the 'journey'. The concept has clearly been hijacked by producers to satisfy a Sunday night viewer. Shame, as it loses its appeal to bikers, but would probably have increased the appeal to Joe Average.

Charlie did Race to Dakar.
From Lisbon - Dakar with Simon Pavey and another guy.
Very enjoyable and great insight into what goes on behind the scenes.
Felt sorry for Charlie going out so soon into the rally but he did really well. The road books looked so complex etc.
Well worth watching and the book is a good read.

I only watched it to lull me to sleep on a Sunday night.

Was really disappointed. I defended the programme a little to the beginning, but it just never really started for me.

No sense of adventure, no great outdoors, just seemed like an off road motorway down to Cape Town.

Not as good as Race to Dakar, no where near LWR. I think it's become too glamourised - the life and soul of such an 'adventure' milked from it.

What a shame.

It was definitely affected by the problem of trying to become so mass market. On top of the fact that it didn't seem as edgy at all as the last one. Everything was prepared for them. they seemd to always have a hostel booked or something.

In LWR they were sleeping in random places, like that unopened Hotel that they had no idea about and stopping in random peoples' houses like that dude with the AK.
It seemed to be more adventurous as in they were going into the unknown.

This one was planned to hell. They knew exactly where they were riding to and everything had been pre booked, or so it seemed at least, which made it into just a journey, rather than an exciting adventure.
The problems they faced as well were nothing. In LWR they had to cross those torrents of rivers, there were broken bridges etc. In this one they all went into hysterics when they had to cross that little mud pool which didn't have the intensity of the raging torrent with random truck drivers all drinking Vodka etc

Yes, they slept in villages and stuff, but maybe that seemed too familiar and sane. LWR gave you this feeling that they really had gone MILES. Whereas this one felt like they'd just ridden south of Europe a bit.

I think that Far East Europe and the parts of Asia they visited in LWR are much more unfamiliar to us. With Africa we have a good idea about the place and what you'd expect, but when you think about it, who really knew about Mongolia... the nomads and the Road of Bones etc.

Maybe I'm wrong.

I'd have also thought that South America will be more exciting too. Its also relatively unknown in the sense that they'd be doing a lot of forest riding and mountainous riding etc that we are not too familiar with. There are bound to be problems and obstacles to face simply due to the geography of the place once you get off the beaten track.
