sump gasket isnt under pressure so near enough anything will work... the cerial box will be more than adequite as it will swell and seal better. remember to not use a 'glossy' box as the shiny stuff will probably fuck things up. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. I have an engine to rebuild as soon as I get the crank back from being reconditioned. I have two big rolls of proper gasket paper but I will be using cereal packet for the crankcase cover and base gaskets.
It works perfectly well, people have been using it for years.
I generally give the shiny side a rub down with some fine sandpaper to take the gloss off it. Fit with a really thin smear of blue hylomar on both sides.
You only really need proper gasket paper when the distance between the two parts you are joining together is critical. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Done it on an R6 race bike for the clutch cover gasket, and some other time I forget.
I dabbed a smear of oil along the edge of the case and pressed it onto the non-shiny side to mark the bit I was going to cut out. Trim with a stanly knife against it where neared.
Seemed to work well . |

No you cannot make a headgasket from gasket paper (or cornflake packets)
I've made many many gaskets over the years. This is how I do it:
Remove the cover you're making a gasket for (obviously) and clean all traces of gasket off it. It's important to get both mating-surfaces fastidiously clean.
Take your gasket paper and offer the cover up to it to work out the best orientation with the smallest wasteage, especially important if you are making more than one gasket because you can move bits about and get multiple-gaskets from one sheet.
If the cover has dowels to locate it, measure on on the outside and make a hole in the gasket where this will line up to. Now this is your reference-point for making the whole gasket. You can either use a battery drill and appropriate-sized bit or what I use which is a set of leather-punches of different sizes. Use an old piece of timber under the sheet to drill into. If there are two dowels, hook the gasket paper over the 1st and pull it tight across the 2nd then tap-around the edge of the dowel to cut the paper and your paper should now be fixed to the cover and locted securely on the dowels.
If you don't have dowels, then place the paper on a flat bit of wood and put the cover on top, then use a battery-drill (and for a jap bike usually a 6mm bit) to drill through all the holes around the casing through the gasket paper, put some of the casing bolts in the holes to locate the paper.
Now draw around the outside of the casing to make the outline of the gasket.
For the inside, you can normally just cut around with small scissors, 6-10mm inside the line you have drawn, then cut around the outside with the scissors to finish your gasket. You could use a knife but you'll need to go careful because it's easy to slice right across the gasket you've made. You can also cut the inside of the gasket out by tapping around the inside edge of the casing with a small ball-pein hammer and using the sharp edge to cut the paper. This takes some practice to not stretch and tear the paper especially around the bolt-holes.
A good gasket on a proper-fitting casing shouldn't need any kind of sealer, but if you do use some be very very sparing with it, since it tends to squeeze-out a lot more than you would expect and the beads of it can come off inside the engine and block the oil-strainer/oilways to the head.
You can get the paper in sheets or rolls, including very heavy stuff, from most auto-factors.
Oh it usually smells of wee ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

In the past I've used instant gasket (the blue sort if it matters) on sumps and rocker covers on car engines with no major issues, but obviously not on pressurized areas. ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |
