After blasting some clays at the weekend, I have a deep routed need to be a man and hunt or maybe just own a gun. Laughing

Easy option would be an air rifle and this is my first quandary, which type? Or is it easy to get a firearms and license for something more satisfying?

Would be just for fun, maybe the odd pot shot at something that moves so nothing too expensive and there are plenty for less than £100 or even £50 for that matters.

Quote:
Public Places and Highways

You may never have an airgun in a public place without proper reason for doing so. If you are travelling to and from a place where you have the right to shoot, the gun must be in a case as above. A gun is loaded if there is a pellet or any form of projectile in it, including an "air weapon which has a loaded magazine, is loaded even though there is no round in the breach".
It is an offence to fire an airgun within 50 feet of the centre of a public highway, if by doing so you cause any member of the public using that highway to be injured, interrupted or endangered. This applies even if you are on private property adjacent the highway. Public highways include roads, bridleways and public footpaths.

But can you fire them in your garden for practice as you will always be within a public highway of some discription?

Quote:
Trespass

If you go on to any land, including over water and in buildings, without permission you are Trespassing. If you have an Airgun with you it is classed as Armed Trespass which is a serious Criminal offence even if the gun is not loaded.

Airgun Prey

The following pests are considered suitable for controlling using a sub-12 ft-lb Airgun.
Brown Rat, Grey Squirrel, Rabbit, Crow, Rook, Magpie, Jay, Wood pigeon, Collared Dove, Feral Pigeon, House mouse, and recently Mink have been added to the list.
These are not always considered pests and only Authorised Persons can shoot them in all circumstances. Please check with your local authority before shooting any live quarry.

Quote:
Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981

All bird and animals are protected by law. Certain species are classified as pests or vermin and only these species can be legitimately shot and then only by authorised persons. An Authorised Person is someone who has the proper permission from the land owner to control pests on that land.

So no popping to the local woods and taking pot shots at the masses of magpies then without permission from whom?

I know that plenty of you manly peeps out there in BCF land have them and I dare say that McGee will post his 'real' guns Laughing but what ya got and what ya do with them?

my dad looking into this at the moment, hes thinking of setting up a clay shoot on his farm, its a bit of a bitch to do it though because of the fall out, it needs to be what, 50m from a road? basic shot guns cost near 200 quid so its not cheap. i think we worked out its cheaper to buy a gun and use a shoot.

Bah when I'm bored I take one of my assualt rifles, shotguns or pistols out back and shoot stuff Mr. Green

Or go to a friends and go on a boat and shot at stuff in a lake.

Laughing

It doesn't get any more fun than throwing half sticks of tnt (yes the real stuff) into the water and just having a massive explosion go off. Or shoot at dead trees floating by Mr. Green

Read it again. You can fire an air rifle within 50 yds of a public highway providing you don't annoy anyone who is using said highway. So yes, you can use it in your garden providing the pellets don't leave your property or annoy anyone walking past.

Permission from the person who owns the land.

I have a 0.177" BSA supersport carbine with a silencer and 4x40 wide angle scope. I don't use it much here but when at my folks I use it for 'plinking' (shooting at random stuff in the garden) and going for an occasional blast at the rabbits on a local farm. Also excellent for knocking off feral pigeons from farmers sheds.

Thats what I thought, you can do do most things in your own garden. My mum moans that a neighbour that backs on to hers takes out the crows as one or 2 have landed dead in her garden. Laughing

Shooting at something from the living room or garden may go against the boundaries though especially if they are in the next doors tree. Thinking

I may just get one and sit in on the evenings and just polish and clean it like some red neck.

Best shot I made was with my brothers bb gun some little pump up rifle that shot metal bb's.

Aimed at a flying woodpecker one handed and fired after giving it lead.

I hit and I killed it Mad

I didn't think I would I wasn't even trying. Got pics some where. The thing that made me feel so bad is it tweeted when it hit the branch of a tree and then when it hit the ground Crying or Very sad

Mind you I am a mean shot when I try Mr. Green

Seriously get an air rifle man top fun.

Get a Co2 jobby. With a bit of malarkey you can get it way above the legal limit and put steel pellets through people's skulls if you want to. Thumbs Up

Low budget end get a Springer. If you can push it,and want to have something 'quality' and that will last, and can be used for other tasks and not just 'plinking',such as field target sports etc,go for a compressed air jobby, not a c02 rifle. In my opinion there shyyyte. You can also go way over the 12 ft-lb limit with new springs Wink I was well into air rifles and air weapons when i was abit younger so know quite abit. Its all good fun, still dangerous as hell though. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

I had air rifles when I was younger, (had a webley carbine, really annoying but I can't remember what model it was, was about 10 years ago... Confused )

I still have my Webley Tempest which I got for my 15th birthday, (this was some time ago...) I used to be able to snapshoot clothes pegs of the washing line at 10 paces... Haven't fired it in a while though.

I once shot a cow by mistake, it was in the distance. Other than that, I'd never shoot anything living. Moot point now, the 'Scottish Government' are trying to ban them; a knee jerk reaction to the actions of one nutball... Rolling Eyes

They are good fun, I used to have an Airarms s400 (think thats what it was called) really accurate could hit a pin head at 30 yards with the scope it had. Does anyone know more about getting a firearms license or what you need to own a shotgun???

An application form
2 referee's
4 weeks to process

Then, an approved lock cabinet thats checked after install before the license is issued.

Sounds easy really. Laughing

I was just thinking how viable it would be having all of these weapons on a bike, then I read your reply Laughing I remember back when I used to do target archery I thought 45lb draw was heavy at 15, then the instructor brought in this massive longbow, was just under 7ft, and took 3 grown men to string! Something like 120lb draw, insanely big. Deffo couldn't get that on a bike, even with G's drainpipe invention.

My little brother bought one of these, its a ratcatcher .22 co2 air rifle they're only about 6ft lb but with a better scope they are accurate over a long enough distance... we used to plink at cans anywhere up to 30-40 metres away... I mean this is by no means a serious rifle the gun is made by crossman and its based on a pistol.

It takes 5g co2 cylinders which can be bought cheaply by the hundred over the net..

Its perfect for a bit of dicking around etc... he also has the laser which is handy when you have it scoped up correctly at the right distance it then just becomes lethal and anywhere you stick the red dot will have a hole.

Apparently you can shoot in your garden as long as you have a brick built wall between your neighbours garden, so if you have a fence you might be limited to using it in your home.

I used to carry a 12ft 2-piece fly rod strapped across my back on my 125.

Anyway, we have such a thing called technology. Full-size, one-piece longbows are so dark-ages. Even if you don't want to go for the whole pulley carry-on (which is for pussies), recurved bows have been about for several hundred years and are much shorter.

A nice composite, recurve, field archery bow can be weighing in at 70lb+.

Most powerful one I ever fired was an old Browning compound bow about 13 years ago. It was made of solid wood with composite limbs and racked up to a 100lb draw. It was designed for bear hunting in the US. They guy never used to fire it at full power but we used to pester him to rack it up and see if we could draw the fucker.

Took me about six attempts but I eventually got the bugger back to the lock-point and loosed. It was like someone firing a rifle right next to your face. The arrow flew about eight feet high of the target and pinned the backstop curtain to a brick wall. I really hurt my back muscles, and my finger pads.

With a blade-head arrow in, that would be a really fucking fearsome weapon.
