I brought my pc to my sisters (for gaming) as her OH has wireless.
Main oc has the router, upstairs and the laptop has the wireless adaptor (usb stick thing) he said he pluged it into the other pc, and the laptop and it connected right away.
I put the adaptor in mine - it finds it but it dont work, light is on and the wizard trys to find something on the net - but obviously it wont connect.
its a belKin adaptor.
Any ideas? ive tried all i know.

Does he have the driver disc? Its worth installing them to see if the PC recognises the adapter

The only CD he got with Belkin is the main one which installs the router. I got the adaptor model number, d/l drivers - burned, installed on my pc and still nothing. Giving up, been trying for 3 hours now.
His PC is no less then a year newer then mine. What I dont get is, he just put the USB into the other PC and it worked fine Evil or Very Mad
I only want to play one game thats online Laughing

Start> Settings> Control Panel> System> Hardware> Device Manager

Look for any devices with a "!" right click and delete it. Reboot the PC. Plug in the adapter now and see if the PC recognises it.

If that doesn't work, it sounds like your PC might only have WinXP service pack 1, installing service pack 2 would solve the problem of it recognising (most) USB drives/adapters. Dosen't help you much if you dont have it on CD to install just now tho, soree

Riiiiiiiiiight, one of the kids come home saying he had the 2nd CD for the adaptors Rolling Eyes all done.

Other issue..... Looking at the wireless there is another 3 people logged on. Taken a fair bit of signal, so the game i want to play keeps DC'ing. How can I stop these 3 people getting our wireless??? as we only want it for this house hold which is 2 PC's and 1 Laptop.

you need to put a pass key type password onto the wireless,

it should tell you how to do this in your booklet you got with the router...

if not someone else should know..

cheers

You can also configure the router to only accept connections from specific devices - you'll need the mac addresses from each wifi adapter and input them into the Access Control List (ACL).

Instructions on how to do it should be in the manual or on the manufacturer's website but you might need to print them off first before making any changes (just incase you can't get back online Doh! )

What make/model is the router?

Hey,

I got one of those belkin routers with the USB wireless stick. What a load of crap it is! Always disconnecting, never finding the network etc.

Got rid of the stick and went for a linksys PCMIA card for the laptop. Works every time!

Belkin gear is rubbish, i would not recommend it to anyone.

PS. I know that dosent help you now.

Shaun.

Belkin routers are fine - I've sold plenty and use one myself no problems there.

Belkin adapters are another matter. Cheap as chips Dabs Value ones are much better.

Go into the routers webpage (just type 192.168.2.1) into your browsers address bar.

Click on the Wireless Security section and choose a secrity tyep and enter a key.
This will set security on the router which will then kick off all the pcs that are connected.

You will need to go into the configuration for each PC that is connected wirelessly and enter the same security details into their adapter setups.
The all will be well again and no-one from the outside world will be able to steal your bandwidth.

Everything that i've ever owned/used with belkin written on it has been shit.

They make routers that have an option to backup the settings but no option to restore the settings... which is just plain gay.

They make routers that lose there settings when they lose power for more then a minute.

One of my old work mates had one replaced under warrenty then the replacement broke a couple of months later... they're just mass produced piles of shite and it's only because of their price that makes people still buy them :/.

Just checked and mine had a restore settings link right under the save settings link.

Most people buy them because they're the main brand sold by the likes of PC World.

Linksys/3com/netgear are better in my opinion.
Cisco even better.

But I wouldn't go as far as saying they're piles of shite (unlike their adapters).
All routers are mass produced by the way.

Yes, ofcourse i realise that but... there's a huge difference between Mass produced products that work and mass produced products that are only good as paperweights Smile...

Also yes i realise that most of their routers will have an option to restore, but the fact that they sell a router that doesn't show that they don't think very hard before putting a product out on the shelf.
