i know theres the air filter cleaner, but been reading that you "need" to add oil to the filter afterwards.
true? or just marketing ploy to get more money out of me?

Pretty sure you do, so your filter actually catches the crap before entering your engine..

As above, the oil makes the filter sticky to catch any bits small enough to get through. If you leave it dry anything that can get through the gaps in the filter will get into the engine.
