Hey all, wondering if anyone one on here would have a clue about a problem i'm having. As i don't know any forums that focus on game specific problems i thought i'd try my luck here first Smile

Ok, i'm basically having a problem when trying to play certain games on the pc and have no idea what is causing the error at hand.
What will happen, is that on certain games, after maybe a minute, maybe several seconds, the game will lock up, the screen will go black and then a few moments later the game resumes, only to repeat the process over anad over thus making it unplayable.

One thing i have noticed is that when this happens it changes my desktop resolution from 1024x768 (think thats right) to something like 1200Xwhathaveyou. Dunno if this has something to do with the problem but thought i'd place it down anyway.

ok, some games seem to work fine and dont have the error mentioned.

games that work:

World of warcraft
Quake 4
Half life 2

games that dont:

half life 2: portal
Bioshock
Darkstar one

all the games run smooth and fine apart from when that error kicks in. Could it be the card overheating or damaged maybe. i just dont get how portal doesnt work yet half life 2 does, ive yet to try episode 1 and 2 from the orange box.

i've tried both new and old drivers for my graphics card.

system spec:

Asus pw5 deluxe motherboard
Ati X1900 graphics card
2gb Giel ram i think its called
some 500 or 600 watt power supply (probs wrong on that one) think the make was called piper :S

anyway, if noone knows what it could be, i'd be greatful if someone knew a forum i could paste this onto for a better resu1t Laughing

cheers guys

Take the graphics card out and make sure that a) the fan is working and b) it and the heatsink are not all clogged up with dust.

I have resolved some in game lock ups by removing the ram and putting it back in. Play the game in the lowest resolution NOT your desktop res. See how it goes, if it plays ok, gradually increase it.

Are your drivers up to date? Your system specs seem fine I don't think its a problem of not having a powerful components.

The fan seems to be spinning away just fine and there's next to no dust on the card or any other componentsas i recently cleaned the computer out (the case is still off the side Embarassed ).

I havn't tried removing the ram and replacing it, will try that shortly though. I have tried running it in the lowest resoloution and didn't seem to make a difference Sad

i've tried the latest drivers, the Omega drivers and the official old drivers that were 6.9 i think all had the same effect.

Cheers for the replies though guys Thumbs Up

What processor you got? Also is there much difference between half life 2 and half life 2: portal ??

Has those 3 games which wont run ever worked properly? Did you do something recently to your machine?

has the x1900 got twin power inputs like the x1950 has? if so the power needs to be delivered from 2 seperate 12v rails, i had he same problem as you and it turns out that even though my power supply was 700w it did not deliver the required ampage over the 12v rails

i did recently change the processor, the old one fried to death i think(was running at 90 odd just on the bios Confused ) .

the problem began just shortly before the old processor died out to be honest, this was several months ago and i've just got around to changing it.

only recently purchased the games mentioned above, with the exception of bio shock which was an old download jobbie.

When the error occurs, all the fans increase in speed for a good moment and then power back down to run at normal pace. I think maybe something is overheating, possibly the motherboard which would royally suck Sad

They use basically identicle engines, graphically they look very similar so they should both work really.

hmm Thinking how weird 2 games which are identical yet one causes problems.

I think its because there could be a problem with the installation of the games itself. Corrupted run files which cause the issue.

Either this or your HD, Mobo or CPU hardware fault.

thats me done on this one Neutral

That sounds like a mobo problem to me.
