Do you need insurance to tax your vehicle ?

Talking to a lad in college he says you need proof of insurance to tax your vehicle. Now ive taxed my bike before and i can't remeber if i needed my insurance documents ?

If this is true im going to be really pissed off because im after a bike that doesn't have tax at the moment and i there is no way of me getting it home then.

Can anyone shed some light on the subject ?

Not sure many people would be bothered about riding a new bike home without tax?

Insurance is a major gamble though. Wouldn't ride without that.

Yes, you need to provide your certificate of insurance (or a cover note until your certificate comes through)

I was lucky when taxing my old bike as the insurance ran out on the same day as the tax did. So they needed a covernote for my insurance renewal as from when i wanted the tax to start.

But the nice oompa loompa in the post office said she would give me tax just that once without the covernote.

So basically, yes you do

Do you drive aswell? You could borrow someones trailer/van if your insurance covers you to do so.

Or rent a van for a day (can't be that dear can it?

Can't really see the point of needing insurance on you to tax your car/bike.

And i haven't got a car licence i might try and get it taxed online just depends how quick the insurance will update there database thing.

Whats a cover note ? just a print out ?

You'l need an MOT certificate as well if its over 3 years old.

You can't do tax online when you've bought but not yet got the new V5 (new keepers supplement doesn't count) as the disk will be sent to the previous keeper.

if your not going to get insurance, why bother with tax

It only really annoys people who buy a car/bike without tax.

Can I tax a bike with a log book if I have the little slip you get from it when you buy a bike?, I'm insured and (soon to be) my bike has MOT.

I'm insured with E-Bike insurance, and printed off an insurance certificate online, and bought the road tax with this document.

Not sure if any other company offers this.
