Tinted visors, legal or not?

Just been looking at tinted visors for my lovely new Shoei (would reccomend one to anyone btw!), but noticed some disclaimers on the few ebay visors. Does this mean they are illegal? Or just over a certain tint %. Oh and also anyone that has got an official (e.g. Shoei) or third party manufactured one, your opinions on them would be great.

The legalities as far as I'm aware is 17%. Apparently any decent copper will use their brains and if its in the middle of a bright day, a visor which is more so will probably slide, but at the same time, even the 17% during nighttime or poor visibility will be questioned.

Remember the police have the right(if not the right, then they do anyway) to confiscate any visor which they believe to be over the 17%, so if its over the top, you could be riding home visorless

It's illegal but keeping a spare on you at all times solves the problem so what's there to worry about? Useful even in winter with the low sun. It'll be stupid not to wear a dark visor in the low sun conditions.

Hi

You can get legally tinted visor, but the amount of tint that is legal is barely noticeable. Limit is 50% light transmission, which is a very light smoked effect.

I have a dark visor, but as an alternative there is the Fog City Hyperoptiks which is activated by light and darkens itself from green to blue.

Someone I know has one and really rates it but a black visor is so much cooler...

Where's the cheapest place to get tinted Visors? I have an HJC-HJ05..type thing, been to visorshop.com and Ebay, can't find any and not buying a new expensive lid for one.

IIRC there ok if they don't say not for road use(or similar) and you carry a spare clear one. There is a big ebay shop based in gurnsey that sells them for about £30 I have had 2 from there and would recomend them.

Ok cheers guys. One last thing: Do the strong tint, or irridium, visors cause any sight problems? AKA is it harder to see with them / does it actually make it less safe etc. Cheers

and NONE of these points were taken! So goes to show that some cops (these were traffic) were still having a moderate view on bikers - they were really friendly like too.

When i was at the NEC, bought a black visor for my Shark

Had it on the next day, got stopped on the way to work

But the copper actually was ok (ish) and just said, you make sure you get it changed.

I did ask him if he was going to stop every car driver with sunglasses on though. He agreed and said, "Yeah, I know the law aint consistent enough, tell me about it." I was like....nice one lol


And cos he wasnt a cock and I dont have "authority" issues (well not right now I dont ) I changed it back.


Riding with a dark visor at night is well shit

I actually didnt like riding with it at night though...lights looked all off and my headlights looked like they werent actually on.

Actually, the legal limit is a mere 15%. I have a 10% visor and it's not worth owning, it doesn't block out enough light, especially in low sun conditions.

I use a black visor (tried a black pinlock but the sun always seemed to be in the tiny strip between the pinlock and visor top) and carry a clear one. I've never been stopped for the visor, or even had it mentioned.

windscreens have to let 75% light through, VERY much doubt you'd not get noticed with a 25% tinted visor.

Plus, I want one but can't get one for less than £20, can get a new lid without for £30, is ridiculous for a bit of plastic and coloured foil.
