i've searched the forums and there seems to be several opinions on this.
its a 2 stroke 125 engine.
i first noticed it after i left my bike out overnight and the temp had dropped to -4
when i started it there was a ticking noise sort of like tick..tick..tick..tick
when i rev the engine the ticking gets faster.
i rode to work and the ticking was still there though it wasn't as bad when the engine was up to normal running temp.

from my forum search it's either the top end bearing or the piston slapping the cylinder.
the bike has done 14000 miles and has had a new piston fitted at about 9000. i have the old piston and it has a bearing still in it which seems ok. i can't feel any side movement etc on the pin so could try swapping it out.

now i'm a bit worried as i understand that if its the piston slapping you need an a bigger piston and have to get the barrel bored.
however because of the coating this can't be done.

if it is piston slap can you get bigger piston rings ? is this possible?

i just hope its not the lower end bearing as this will be a bigger job. but from searching when this goes its more of a rumble than a tick sound so i don't think it is.

sorry for the long post Smile just trying to explain this as best as possible.

any advice suggestions welcome.

Thanks all

The little end rattles, big ends knock, main bearings rumble.

What bike is it?

If you are certain it is coming from the top end of the engine, then it is more than likely the little end.

hi
its a NS125R
It sounds like a tick rather than a tapping or rattle or knocking.
i'll post an mp3 of it tomorrow to see if that helps with identifying it.
cheers

Sounds almost like your exhaust blowing or perhaps a water pump bearing.
