I'm after a bit of security advice, really.

At work, I have to park on a gravel car-park, where there's absolutely nothing to secure my bike to. Right now, I'm just looping an Oxford Magnum lock round the rear wheel; it's heavy, takes up too much room in my bag, can shift around to become uncomfortable, and its potential is ruined by being used as a standalone.

So I'm after a Disc Lock, or any other ideas on what to do to keep my bike a bit safe. I have an alarm and imobiliser fitted already.

I saw an ABUS Granit Detecto 8000 alarm at the NEC bike show Here, which looked pretty impressive. Information online seems to indicate it's up to the job. Assuming it fits my bike (XJ600N Divvy — I'll measure the disc later), do any of you have any opinions on these, or can anyone offer any other suggestions?

Cheers.

Cheers, Type_mo, I'll look into that.

One question about alarm disc locks, though: if they're self-arming, how do you remove the lock without them going off?

it has a sensor inside it that arms it when its loocked on the disc
pop into your local heing ericke and ask them nicely if they can show you how it works.

there 3 different sizes,f rom £39.99 to £99.99.

and you can buy an adaptor and a chain so you can have an alarmed chain lock aswell.

Ta. You didn't answer my question, mind Wink Maybe you mis-read.

I'll pop into HG at the weekend and talk to them about it.

Disc locks are dodgy though you can break the lock and or you can just take off the wheel and remove the disc with the 6 allen bolts which hold it on , took the wheels off me CBR the other day, took me less than 5 minutes,

You can't get it off with out setting the alarm off a bit. I've got an XENA one and when I'm unlocking it I get the two warning beeps, but I've gotten so quick at unlocking it that all I get is the warning beeps and I don't actually set off the alarm.

I only use my disc lock as an additional security item: usually in low risk areas. I've got a Motrax one I think, had it for a couple of years now.

Well yes, but if I buy a good enough one, breaking the lock will hopefully be harder than it sounds. As it stands, my current lock is broken (the sleeve that hides the ball-end of the lock is missing) so I need to decide whether to get a disc lock or buy another proper chain and deal with the hassle.

If 5 minutes' work in the open with two screaming alarms isn't going to deter a thief, nothing really will. Unfortunately, I really don't have the option of securing the bike to anything but itself. If I did, there'd be no contest as to what type of lock I'd buy.

Thanks for your input though. Much appreciated.

Thanks. I thought it'd probably be as such. With a bit of practice, then, it shouldn't be a problem.

Cheers Craig. I park in a fairly low-risk area, as far as I know. I haven't heard any reports of theft or vandalism so far, but it's always better to be safe than sorry, to use an old cliché.

What other security do you use? Presumably it involves physically locking the bike to something? I wish it were an option for me, I really do.

I can vouch for the motrax vishas. It's a heavy, sturdy lump of metal and the casting seems to hold out nicely. It's got a nice, industrial feel to the lock, compared to the oxford. For 30 quid, you can't get any better. Mind you, the xena alarms are meant to be good, but i still like the solid feel of the motrax - its a shame they have no alarm on them though.

I cut my side stand switch and put a little flick switch up behind a side panel that means the bike wont move under its own power unless the thief flicks the switch.

Its not in an obvious place and i dont think any half witted bike thief's thought process would be...

"damn this bike keeps cutting out, Hang on a moment there must be a converted side stand switch somewhere!"

Of course it wont stop anybody chucking it into a van but it does give an added piece of mind Thumbs Up
