confused

Hello all. I was looking at some insurance quotes for srad 600, zx6r, bandit, etc and they didn't ask whether they were restricted or not (Im 17 on my restricted licence) do you think this means I could get away with not putting a restrictor in or does it come up later when you buy the insurance?

You can take out a policy on anything you like and it will be be insured so long as its covered by your licence.


whether you inform the insurer that you have restricted licence is up to you but just because your insurance policy covers a full power bike doen't mean you can ride it,

If you do and get into trouble then your insurance will ask to see your licence, At which point the guy on the other end of the phone will ask for a restriction certificate then when you can't produce one he will rub his hands together and say sorry sir your policy is null and void.

I personaly do not hold a uk car licence but that doen't stop me from insuring a car which coincidently a have done this year to earn some no claims bonus for when i decide to take my test.

This does not however entitle me to drive my car.

Thats the weird thing because I selected the option for A2 and still didn't.

They never asked me if my bike had a restriction kit in (it does), but if you ride without one, your insurance because void I think, as you aren't riding with a licence. Some insurers have been know to ask for a letter stating that there is a restriction kit in place.

Remember if you get pulled and the police don't think you have the restriction kit they can get a test done on it, and prove that your not riding within your licence.

Its like de-restricting mopeds.

If you ride an un-restricted bike on a restricted license, you will be riding with no license (since they are two different categories). Your insurance will cover you for "using a vehicle which you are licensed to drive, or were licensed to and have not been disqualified from having a license to drive", therefore your insurance will not be valid. THe insurance company will be happy to take your money especially if they find later that the policy you paid for doesn't cover.

Well said, insurers will take your money whether you are entitled to drive a certain vehicle or not.

My brother had an aprilia rs 125 that was then stolen, his insurere tried to tell him that his insurance was invalid because the bike had previously been a catagory d write off (unknown to him as the logbook was issued for the bike and was clean),

Which means it is to be broken for spares only and the dvla had somehow allowed the v5 to be issued when it shouldn't have been.

But my point is that they had no problem taking his money whilst having the facilities to check the vehicles insurance history before hand, I personaly belive they knew when they first insured him, and it took 18 months to get them to pay out, which they did minus £500 off the agreed value. After persistant arguements over the phone and a phone call from my bros solicitor.
