The front brake has always been not as crisp as one would like, but as some bite harder than others I took it for gospel and got used to it.

The pads did rattle a little in the calipers, but as soon as you touched the lever and the pads moved onto the disc the rattle ceased and the brakes would slow the bike down.

I noticed it maybe yesterday, but definitely today the brakes had some awful fading and would only bite and stop the bike as you pulled the lever hard against the grip. It was absolutely pissing it down with rain so again put it down to the discs being wet.

On the way home, a different story.

Dry out and I can now manage to ride, yes ride with the front brake applied. Shocked

I have yet to check the fluid levels.

Its a hydraulic so no brake cable.

WTF could it be?

Hi

Sounds like a caliper that is seizing up? Not sure which bike this is on, but maybe a sliding caliper that is no longer sliding, hence pulling the lever is just pushing one pad on one side of the disk but not pulling the other pad across.

All the best

Keith

BING... fluid level... does it feel spongy at all? you need to re-bleed them as you more than likely have air in the system...

the thing is... you need to find out where all that brake fluid went.

No leak, no fluid on floor, levels fine when last checked.

Its the 7R.

If it is the calipers then its deja vu as the FZR!!!!

Hi

Whip the calipers off and check the pistons are all moving about the same. Seized pistons on one side of a caliper would result in the other side just bending the disk.

All the best

This happened when we accidently filled a mate's brakes with fork oil Smile

A little seal in the master cylinder expanded and stopped any fluid being pumped from the reservoir down the hose.

Not saying this is what happened, but a possibility I guess.

How'd of thought that the 'pratt' would be right?

Well couldn't really see anything at ten last night but with the sun out I believe, fingers crossed, that I deduced what the problem may have been down to.

If a picture paints a thousand words then this is going to be a long reply:

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/26122007024.jpg

After the debacle with the brakes on the FZR I didn't hold out much hope with trying to bleed these. With a quick trip to Halfords for some fluid and bleeding kit I held my breathe and what would you know, air and fluid came out as I pulled the levers and after 10 minutes per side no more air!

A little wheel spin and a trip round the block and all seems ok, but I will need the calipers to be cleaned and seals replaced to be sure but this can be postponed till the workshops are back open and I have a day spare to drop the bike off.

Tempting fate I hope not.

Unsure to where the fluid had gone?

You will probably find that it was pretty low before and as your brake pads wear the fluid level drops. Just check the bike for leaks and perhaps get your missus to hold the brakes while you check.

You wouldn't have had to do it if you check the bike every week. Hate to think of the state of other things if something that is staring you in the face gets missed. Shocked

Engine oil, rear brake fluid level, chain, tyre tread, tyre pressure, take a couple of seconds to check and could save hours of work or even save your life if you spot something.

The brakes on the FZR were a bitch and no matter what method I adopted they just wouldn't bleed so paying a tow truck to take it tho the mechanics it took them over a week to sort out. They didn't seem to be the correct brakes for the year or even model. Subsequently the seals were an odd size that had to be ordered and so on.

But that was the shed that was a Yamaha.

In my defense, I leave for work in the dark and virtually come home in the dark too and I know its the wrong attitude to have, but if something is working then it must be alright?

Hangs head in shame
