Watch out of nigerians Laughing

It depends on the value of the bike as to where is best to advertise IMO.

Timewasters

Thieves

Scam artists

Idiots that think because you sold them a bike 18 months ago and it's now broken, that it's somehow still your fault

Ive just sold my bike and I can tell you it can be a horrendous experience!

Ive had people asking stupid questions such as 'can you deliver the bike to london/ireland' etc. I had a very agressive man from newcastle phone me halfway through the England V Germany match to tell me 4k was too much and 3 would be more likely. I had people asking if I would keep the bike for them as 'theirs is just about to sell'.

Ebay can be a bit of a joke, I'd reccomend a classified listing as they cost about £15 quid for a month, rather than paying a final valuation fee on sale that can cost you upwards of £40 on an auction that someone may win and then not pay. You get 85 watchers and no bids, blah blah blah. Its a right pain!

Best of luck though!

You shouldnt really do this, as its against ebay rules. But it works - List your bike twice, once as a classified ad and once as an auction starting with a low price. Take the time to make an excellent informative ad, include lots of pics, (link to a photobucket account or something to show more pics so you dont have to pay the fees for extra pics Surprised )
Let the auction run for a while so you have plenty of watchers.
Withdraw the ad before the allowed period (24hrs I think) and cancel any bids.
Keep the classified ad running.
Classified ads dont get much interest, auctions do. List them at the same time but when you cancel the auction and people still see the classified you will generally get emails from the more genuine buyers asking if the bike is still for sale.
This is technically a bit illegal by ebays terms but they are still getting the dollar for the classified ad so its morally ok imo Wink

Once again, it works - I can vouch for that. Thumbs Up
Also list in all your local free ads etc. Use bulletin boards if you have any friends/family who work in offices etc with a in house bulletin/sale site.

The more you make people aware the easier it will sell. If you park up often in the same place no harm sticking a for sale sign on it while its parked.

hth

Thumbs Up

Watch out for people who win the bike for 3k, then when they come to collect it, everything is suddenly non standard and dodgy and worn and they want £100 off for this and £50 off for that etc.

Also expect a million "How much are you looking for mate?" In the hope that you don't know what its worth and ask for £1k for a £3k bike.

I somehow go to a dealer every time I want to sell a car/bike. I've never sold any vehicle privatelly. For me it's too much hassle . The idea of inviting completely unknown people to my house puts me off. It can be a sneaky thief or unwanted Gypsy tenant.

For peace in mind and quick, trouble free sale I can accept a few hundred quid less.

You can't really sell your bike more than once can you Wink

Stick it on pistonheads and bike trader to start with. You will usually get more money and less scammers then Ebay. I only use Ebay as a last resort if I can't sell it any other way, there's far to many time wasters and scammers on Ebay. Like has been said, watch out for scammers, and try to get a price and stick to it, to stop people bartering you down to much!!

Iv'e only ever sold 2 MX bikes though, all my road bikes get PX'd with a dealer for a new bike, its much easier!

I've sold lots of bikes and cars privately, the majority on ebay. My only advice is to be as honest as possible. I always let the buyer try before they hand over any money. Works for me and I've never had a problem.

Apply common sense to the situation = win.

If they want a test ride then make sure you are holding the cash. Don't accept an envelope thinking the monies are in there, check - I've had a guy try this on me.

Don't give out your address; as they can scope your place out. Arrange to meet at a busy local area instead - if they are genuine then you can always get them to follow you to your place to do the paperwork.

This is what I do - honesty saves a lot of grief. You can list all the faults and still make the advert sound positive. I only rarely allow test-rides and then only if they can prove they are insured - remember that anyone riding someone else's bike is only insured third party so if they run it off the road you gotta get the money out of them.

That could be seen by a buyer as dodgy, I wouldn't want to buy a bike from a different address than what is on the V5.

And the most quoted rule when buying a car/bike is.......

Never meet the seller in such places... Odds on its not theirs to sell. Karma

im not talking about meeting them out side a crack den in the middle of now where,

i mean a place where they can come in sit down, have a cuppa, sign paper work etc.

plus id rather put there mind at rest, with a simple "its his house"

then the reverse which could mean be harmful to me and my family by a dodggy buyer knowing where my bike is kept and where i reside
