Apologies for making another thread on sprocket sizes but after reading through some older posts I'm suitably confused!

I'm putting my project XJ back on the road following a highly annoying incident with my regular XJ (damn, I must think of names to seperate the two!) and after delving a little deeper into my project XJ I noticed it could use a new front sprocket so off I go to wemoto to see how much they are and they're only £12 for the front and £24 for the rear and there's options for more/less teeth so I was thinking to mess with the sprocket sizes for a bit more acceleration. The chain on the XJ is new as it was just put on when I got it by the last owner just before I got it so I'm assuming it's the standard length fr the bike.

So anyway, my question is if I go 1 tooth up on the back sprocket and 1 tooth down on the front sprocket will I be able to keep the chain at the standard size?

Thanks

As far as I am aware no, as it's all to do with ratios.

Lets say the front sprocket has 1 tooth to every 3 at the back.
You would need to drop 3 at the back and up it 1 on the front to keep the chain the same length.

The ratios are only an issue when it comes to working out how to keep the gearing the same. If you take a link out at one end, and add a link at the other you will be just fine.

Yeah I had a feeling it wasn't as simple as I thought it was!

My options for sprockets are:

Rear standard size
Rear standard + 1 tooth

Front standard size
Front standard - 1 tooth
Front standard - 2 teeth

I want to downgear it to see what it's like and make it a bit more peppy but I want to keep the standard chain length just to make it easier for now, does anyone have any idea what sprockets I'd need?

Thanks

So 1 up at the back and 1 down at the front should be ok?

Should be fine. In many cases adding or taking away a tooth at only one end can be accommodated with the chain adjustment anyway.

If you think about what you are doing, by adding a tooth at one end, you add half a link of chain (one roller) if you take away a tooth at the other, you take away half a link (one roller) +1/2 minus 1/2 takes us back to where we were.

I anyone isn't sure about what I'm saying, cut out some cardboard disks and loop a string round them, you can soon prove to yourself that all will be A-OK.

If you want to maintain a constant ratio, then if you increase the gearbox sprocket by one tooth, then you would probably have to increase the rear wheel sprocket by three teeth, and probably fit a longer chain.
