I have a few problems with my bike. A 1999 NSR125RX.

1. Power valve.

When I switch my ignition on, the RC valve keeps opening and closing. It does this when it's running too, until about 7000rpm when it stays open like it should do. It’s making me look stupid when I ride down the street, it keeps jumping forward. I’ve removed the box but I can’t tell what’s wrong with it. The cables attached to the pulley don’t seem to be sticking and wires all seem attached. What tells RC valve to open and close, is it the main CPU or whatever it’s called? What do you think is wrong with it?

2. Compression.

My compression is about 110psi and it should be 142+/-28psi. It’s very close to the range so is it worth sorting out? I’m guessing it would be a new piston and rings that are needed – can a piston be put straight in, or does it have to be machined for my bike.

3. Not heating up.

When I ride my bike at speed (i.e. faster than “town” speed) its temperature is only just out of the blue, nowhere near the middle. It’s probably to do with the weather at the moment so I’m not particularly bothered but do you think it’s worth blocking up the radiator a bit for winter?

4. Carb jets

How can you tell what jets are in the carb? I’m just wondering because I’ve derestricted my exhaust, intake and put in carbon reeds. Full size jets are the next thing on my list. Where can I get them from?

5. Paint/Bodywork.

My bike is black over silver with yellow stickers like this one...

https://w3.bikepics.com/pics/2007%5C10%5C17%5Cbikepics-1058227-800.jpg

The code is NH1E. Is there anywhere is can get the silver paint? And what about the stickers? I can’t find the vertical NSR one anywhere.

Thanks for your help.

Joe

Er, Alains would be your best bet mate(should be along soon), but the heating thing, it's not a bad point it won't go to the middle. Rather that than it overheating.

I wouldn't block the radiator, EVER. Just bleed the system and put some anti-freeze in.

The jets in the carb/s should have been done at the same time as the reeds etc,it could run weak and hole a piston, you have got more air into it without "upping" the fuel side ,(disaster) Thumbs Down Shocked .Leave the compression till it needs a rebore/piston & rings,no idea on paint, power valve is acting up ,yes this comes from ECU,too cold is not good either ,better than too hot but not right, stat is stuck open,or guage is iffy, take wire off of sensor and short to "ground"with ignition switched on the guage should go to hot as in over heating,if not guage is knacked Wink

just above the blue is the norm for nsr's mine is the same, as for the powervalve, that is controlled by the rc valve control unit which is underneath the join on the carb where the airbox is attached. there are two sets of wires that come from the rc unit, there is a 3 pin connector and a 4 pin connector and they are in the litttle black box on that tray thing that holds the servo motor in place, you mignt want to check those connections and also the red/white wire that comes from the cdi (which is behind the rear light) as this tells the rc valves unit what revs the engine is doing. i spent months fannying about with mine as they were like yours but my problem was a short in the loom when it got wet, good luck and never give up

65(power) you can get them from here

www.dellorto.co.uk

just give em a ring and tell them your carb number which should be phbh28/fd

the RC valves is control by a box (called RC/valves control unit) which open and closes the valves function of the speed engine :
- 0-2000 open
- 2000-7500 close
- over 7500 open (french import open at 6500)
the speed info is transmitted by a red/white wire coming from the CDI and arriving in the 3 wires connector plug with the rc/control unit . so your problem has 2 possibilities : this wire has loose contact or the cdi is to be replace
about the heating , this is definetly normal
about the jets upjetting is the best as : main 138,idle (slow) 42, power 65 . the jets are marked on top with their size except the powerjet which marked around the head (you need a magnifier to read it) . you probably have 132,38,55 , mail to mattew sales@dellorto.co.uk carb is 28PHBH/FD
about compression , you cannot change piston if you do not know the size of the barrel . a letter (A to E) is hammered under the exhaust port (you cannot read it without dismantling the barrel)
if you're going to keep the bike for a while rebuid the top-end (£180) otherwise change rings, pin, bearing, clips, seals, gasket et give it a good de-coke

Thanks everyone. I'll give it a go later.

If anyone knows where i can get the silver paint from, please let me know.

Also, I went to Wickes (DIY place) to get some caustic soda for my exhaust and was told they weren't allowed to sell it. Is everywhere like that now?

Firstly, do NOT use caustic soda in your exhaust, anything made of aluminium will dissolve. Use a 50/50 mix of petrol and parrafin and it will decoke it nicely. Obviously it is inadvisable to smoke whilst doing this!

Secondly, the paint you should be able to get from RS paints, they colour match according to pain codes:

https://www.motorbikepaint.co.uk/

You can buy touch up pens, spray cans or paint for a spray gun.

Cheers

Rolling Eyes caustic soda is fine in a NSR exhaust. Did mine 4 times and nothing had 'dissolved'.

yeah - don't think there's any aluminium in an NSR exhaust. I've heard loads of people on here say it works a treat. I just can't find any.

I was quoted unreal prices (hundreds of pounds) for the original stickers from Davidsilverspares for my black/grey nsr (NH-1). I thought it was crazy and came up with this solution to make drawings myself and get them cut from high grade vinyl.

Result below:

i've thought about that too, but how do you do it? do you make templates and get them cut from those or do you do it on the computer?

I used CorelDraw to make drawings (loads of measuring was involved), then got some company specializing in commercial adds on vans, car etc... to cut them for me from the files given.
