Just curious, whenever there are local motorcycle accidents/fatalities my parents tend to give me this 'biking is very selfish of you, because if you died, your family would be the ones that suffer the consequences' lecture and I feel bad about it for a while, then a few days later I can't believe I ever considered giving up something I love doing so much, anyway was just wondering if any of you have the same/similar thoughts?

Just remind them, that they were very selfish to conceive you, because you will most likely out live them....
They should just let you live your life as you see fit, not as they think....

You could drop dead at any second from any number of things not bike related.

Death is the only certainty in life.....

Even taxes can be avoided Laughing

Occasionally I have my doubts that I'm being sensible, but I think I love being different more than I love biking. As 99.9% of commuters are lemmings "in shiny metal boxes" I much prefer sitting astride a missile and seeing if I have the wherewithal to make it to journey's end alive. Mr. Green

That one always makes me laugh, as if they'd give up driving if a random stranger was killed in a car crash Laughing

It's simple, we all die at one point, riding a bike is simply as much a factor in this as a parent taking you out and the car get's hits by another vehicle, the same chance of being squished. Thumbs Up

On a bike you can control your riding, in a car you can't control the drivers.

Your mum and dad wouldn't stop driving if someone they knew burned alive in an upturned car.

The less nagging you hear the easier it is to just get on and ride. I have bad patches sometimes, it just makes riding less enjoyable for a bit.

My dad hates bikes after he was scared senseless at the end of the 1970/80s in Wingerworth (Derbyshire) by this guy on a big Honda , who had no arms (he was apparently a teratagenic in womb thalidomide victim) . After going helmet less at well over 130..

He said bikes are dangerous, then one day on his travels he saw 2 things which changed his mind when a guy burned to death alive trapped in a car, and later on when a guy in a car which was hit behind by a lorry into another lorry, he tells me it was like squeezing a can of corned beef.

After my accident in August it's a thought that crossed my mind. I really couldnt give up bikes though, They mean so much to me.

Family were a bit concerned at the time, They know the score with bikes though.

every time my mum hears of someone dying in a bike related accident, she gets on at me to get rid of the CBR.

it pisses me off somewhat as she smokes like a chimney, eats very rich, fatty foods and takes no exercise!

Whilst in hospital recovering from a busted spine, I was seriously upsetting the nurses by trying on new helmets and talking about my next bike. I didn't even know if I was going to walk, never mind ride again.

I have never had second thoughts, I just do it and don't even think about it. I have wanted to ride ever since Barry Sheene and Kenny Roberts had their great rivalry for the World Title and I can't ever imagine a time in my life where I wont have a bike to ride.

Yeah i get that speech when any bikers die up near my way, but im too selfish to care if i die or not so generally disregard thier drivel. I know they care about me and everything, but at the end of the day im an individual and will do what the fuck i want.

I am fairly sure it was on here i read

'Why tiptoe safely through life only to arrive safely at death'

I liken it to being rich. Whats the point of having ten million pound if you dont spend any of it? Might as well not have it. Money is there to be spent - and life is there to be lived.

You get one life you should use it best way you can.

You could ride a bike for 50 years and be fine. Could ride one for 50 minutes and die. Could not ride one and live for 50 years. But you could also not ride one ever and get hit by a bus, get a disease etc and be dead in 50 minutes.

When people say your being selfish that if you die they'll have to deal with it i would just respond

'Well if i die then at least i died living' Thumbs Up
Surely they want to know you were happy before you died rather than miserable and alive?

I get that said to me a fair bit, more so by my son, who also loves being on the bike Confused

My response is ' If I die whilst out on my bike at least you know I have died doing something that I love and I was probably smiling just before I died'. That tends to silence my family as they all agree that I am at my happiest when out on my bike.

The only time I considered giving up the bike was after a minor off when I parked the bike in a hedge. I wouldn't get back on it until I was forced to, but after my more serious crash (broken bones involved) I couldn't wait to get back on him.

absoluetly !!!!!! I feel life is too short to worry about these things I bought my first bike four months ago just when my dad was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer sadly he lost his fight for life on 19th december, I didn`t tell my mum as I didn`t want to worry her further but she found out anyway and was fine about it, she said " you should do what you want in life as you really don`t know whats around the corner "

I say just get out there and live your life to the full, just don`t live it recklessly Smile
