I'm getting a jacket and gloves sometime soon, and was wondering if anyone had any particular reccomendations for either. I am on some sort of budget, but not that low (I'd rather pay more and get a better jacket, just not stupid money).

Cheers in advance Thumbs Up

HG panthans are on sale at the moment. Jacket - well anything on sale from HG is usually very good quality. All my first riding kit was HG, until it got sold off to various BCFers over the time and myself upgrading (or as some might see it, downgrading) to alpinestars. Get yourself to your nearest store and see what they can do for you. The prices may surprise you! And you'd also be suprised as to how long they'll last and look clean for!

Any bike shows you know of near Brighton/the South? Only ones I know are up north Sad

Oh and I've been looking at Richa jackets; any opinions on them?

Thanks so far

I have an Alpinestars textile jacket, can't remember the exact name for it though.

I would recomend it though, its warm, comfy, and the shoulder and elbow protection stays in place and feels adequate enough!

Also, I keep finding new pockets Razz

Oh, thanks for pointing that out, II'll probably want some more protection than that tbh.

The HG website is down for some reason, or at least I think it's their fault rather than my internet's.

Did YOU know that skin and bone grinds away at an inch a second at 30mph? Laughing

I notice that HG gloves are getting good posts Confused . My missus has HG and i have Richa carbon. I found that the HG are not as warm as my Richa gloves despite being the same price. You can feel there is less insulation when you put them on.

Not quite as much as that, i talk from experiance and travelling alot faster than that in jeans, well jeans for the first second then skin for what felt like a lifetime. But the pain and agony is not nice and the scaring is never pretty. Zip together textiles or leathers is a must, spend what you can on gear. Decent gloves and boots are well worth the investment and so is a half decent comfy lid.

I now have dainese two piece leathers, my old sidi boots and alpinestart gloves (survived the crash and held up really well) and a shoei XR1000. You dont have to spend as much as that on gear but dont skimp as it is something you will regret if the worse happens.

HTH Thumbs Up

I am using this and think its pretty good. It has a removable thermal liner and a removable waterproof membrane. You need a fleece on the coldest days as just a T is not enough.

I would look to a longer jacket for this time of year. I have a Richa same colour as the one at the top of the link with a removable quilted lining. Now on its 2nd year and still water tight.

Leather or textile is very much upto you and what type of riding you are going to be doing.

Alot of the stuff HG sell is their own brand, and its one of the well known big places that sells bike gear.

I think my pathans are great, but then i haven't tryed many other gloves. My summer gloves are also HGs own brand. Tbh, they're shit.

I splashed out *ALOT* on the rest of my gear, but was running a bit low on cash when it came to gloves Laughing Sister bought me a pair for £50 for my birthday (Did CBT for my birthday and got bike about 3 weeks later). I once borrowed my girlfriends mums gloves (She also wears XS gloves like me, and has about pairs.) They were a very snug fit, and had lots of protecion, but felt so rstrictive, i had to take them off after an hour.

I'll probably get some stupidly expensive alpinestars gloves in the summer Laughing Only th expensive stuff fits me properly Crying or Very sad

Thanks Noxious, and yeh, I will definately not skimp on kit (already got the Shoei lid, just need the rest now Very Happy ).

If I go to the London Bike Show (thanks to whoever pointed that out), am I likely to get decent discounts on clothes? Anyone go there last year etc?

Does that include the lobster gloves? They are £39.99 on the website, but there are some Spada gloves for £29.99 at Infinity.

If they are in the sale, do you know how much for? And if not, has anyone tried those Spada gloves? Is it worth paying an extra tenner for the HG ones?

No problem, thanks for the karma, I went last year and to the NEC bike show the prices are okay. It really depends on what you want to buy, but the biggest benefit is getting to try lots of gear before you buy. Occasionally the vendors have some end of line stock and that's where you can make a real saving.

you may hear people insulting frank thomas leathers, but i got some second hand off ebay for a grand total of about 70 quid for my 2 piece set, and they are damn good for the money, nice and padded, good fit and zips and they dont leak unless you ride for a long time in hammering rain.

my mate uses the textiles aswell and there the dogs danglies aparently.

Cheers
John

John - I would quote you but I can't multi quote for some reason (do I need more Karma ?). Thanks for the info, those sound amazingly cheap. Oh and I like the way out of your bikes the good ol' CG is still going Laughing

to do multi quotes you need to copy n paste and add in the HTML and all that jazz.

for your first gear just get whatever is cheap and fits, additional tarty bits like lots of vents, pockets etc... can wait.

my CG is a pretty solid bike really, no problems on it that weren't caused by my cock ups and even then i haven't managed to kill it. ive blown every gasket on the top end, including the head gasket and its still running just as well as it always was, the only reason im 'fixing' it soon is because i can be arsed to check the oil constantly. and im still certain that the CG can get me the 100 miles up to a rally in derby soon and back without problems.

moral of the story: cgs are slow but they are almost impossible to kill Thumbs Up

Cheers
John

...and he has tried you know Wink

I've also got some Frank Thomas gear which I picked up at the NEC last year. I bought some Fusion (now Xtreme) Trousers @ £99 and some Aqua Fazer glubbs @ £39. They're a good starting point, but I know other people will recommend different items. I've since bought the matching Fusion (now Extreme) Tour Jacket @ £149 from a local dealer so any prices lower than that are to be considered "good". Have fun at the show, Excel is a pig to get to and I think the NEC is a bigger show but you'll find something for sure. Thumbs Up
