PostPosted: 17:28 - 06 Jan 2008    Post subject: size of M&P £15 top box? Reply with quote

Hi,

I am thinking of getting one of those top boxes that M&P are selling for £15 but am unsure of how big it is (and therefore how much I can fit in it).

Would anyone be kind enough to measure theirs and let me know the internal and external dimensions?

Also, I think I am going to have to mount it through the spare pillion seat I have as nobody seems to do a rack for a ZX-6R J2. Can anyone tell me if they have seen a rack for this bike? Google has not come up trumps on this one. I do like the idea though of using the spare seat as it allows for quick removal when I am not in commuter mode.

Thanks
Daesimps

A guy I met at a trackday once had a setup such as you describe. He simply drilled four holes in the seat to line up with the box and then bolted the box to the seat.

Looked quite neat too.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

That's exactly what I'm thinking off. I just don't want to buy the box and find out I can't get much in it.

Think it's 28litres, should be enough room for a change of clothes or common essentials, not bad space for the price. Wink

That's the problem. I am not sure how big 28 litres is Confused

It's mainly so I can lock away my helmet and stuff when I go to work, as I have to park away from the office and walk to the office.

Not sure how big I would have to go to fit my laptop in though. Might be easier than having a rucksack on.

Think of them 2litre bottles of pop, a few of 'em.... Wink

Off topic, reckon these will go over normal 'work' shoes to act as waterproofs?

A normal size rucksack say 500mm high, 300mm wide and 160ish deep will carry around 25L.

Rolling Eyes

Do I need to explain why I rolled my eyes at that? If I do, drop me a PM and I'll explain it to you in detail.

Renntec do a luggage rack for the J2. £35ish.

Top box should bolt straight to it, or you could just carry things in a plastic bag and take it off when you get to work or where ever.

M&P stuff has a habit of falling apart, not arriving or being shocking quality when it does arrive.

I bought on of those £15 top boxes for my wifes GS500.
It's fine. It will take her full face helmet on its own. She keeps her back pack and disk lock in it all the time and still fits her books for school (shes a teacher).
Well worth £15. The locks are ok and it has a quick release which is fiddly but ok.

Thanks for all the info guys.

I think I'll just buy the box - it's only £15 after all.

Polarbear - I guess you didn't have any problems fitting the rack etc. Can you tell me where how it attaches?

Thanks

On the GS500 it was an absolute piece of piss to fit, remove the grab rails and it mounts there and further down the frame, 4 bolts. The box mounting plate has 4 clamps that hold it onto the rack.
It was really easy.
Renntec racks seem very well made and come with instructions and all bits. Mine cost £55 though from here

I ran Renntec today and they sent me the fitting instructions for the rack. It only connects by 4 bolts - in place of the grab handles. There is no connection lower down on the bike. It makes me wonder if it would hold a top box. Their official limit is 2.5kg.

Does the box have some form of quick release for removing it when I go for a blast?

Thanks for the info

Theyll take a fair bit more weight than that even though its not recommended.

For givi top boxes, they only recommend 10 - 15kg in them.

As long as the bolts are decent and fitted properly with some rubber washers you should have no problem at all.

Yes, the box has quick release.
The rack on the GS500 has the same 2.5kg limit but to be honest it will take much more than that, as tested by my wife going to Asda Rolling Eyes
Here are some piccys. The rack with the box mouting plate, the box on the bike and one of the box with a 5 litre petrol can in to show you the size!
