unlike my other half i scab quite badly when having tattoos done, however I have followed my daughters advice on how to stop it happening.

take savlon to the studio and request the artist uses that rather than vaseline prior to the clingfilm being placed. Leave the clingfilm in place for several hours then wash as usual. Reapply savlon and clingfilm. Repeat twice a day for 4 days. It is a bit of a pain but by this time the healing has stopped the skin from scabbing to the point where you just get flaking skin rather like mild sunburn thus reducing the desire to pick as theres nowt really to pick at.

Obviously it may be difficult if the tattoo is in an awkward place but for a large expensive piece of work it is worth the hassle. I have had both calves tattooed and the difference was unbelievable.

Tattooists use vaseline for the following reasons

it keeps the needles from dragging and keeps the area easier to clean whilst inking.

it inhibits bleeding and keeps the transfer on the skin and when the tattoo is finished and cleaned it keeps the dressing from sticking to the tattoo.

The experienced tattooist who im now actually on the phone to as i am typing this would like to know why you believe that this should not be done as he is has obviously missed something in the 27 years hes been tattooing.

pile cream is very good, I actually used that on my back for my tiger, apparently it works by closing up the blood vessels etc, theres an ingredient in it that comes from sharks which some people can be allergic to , but tattoos seem to heal better with that than savlon, stinks though Wink

AFAIK The idea of not using vaseline on fresh tattoos is that it clogs up the pores stopping oxygen getting to the wound but ive seen plenty of tattooists use it and plenty not use it, each to his/her own and probably covered in old wives tales!

I have tried prep H, but found it wasn't that great. Personally I just used E45, I get it in big tubs at costco and apply several times a day.

A big problem with stuff like tattoo goo for big tattoos in sensitive areas is that its just too hard to rub in. E45 is nice and soft, so lubricating a fresh tattoo isn't quite so painful.

That said, anything involving getting the 4 inch square below your armpit on the inside of your arm done is going to hurt. So much.

Thought it was my job to be the girl? Razz

E45 is the best, in my experience.

Its your job to be a bitch. Its like being a girl, but involves a lot more rape.

hang on a minute guys, i know theres different stuff, all I was doing was saying i have found something that works for people who scab badly, my other half had his head tattooed last week and theres no sign of a scab, hes one of the lucky ones who heal dead quick. I was just thinking that this was one other option for people like me as I have now tried it and found it the best way so far and wanted to pass it on.

When I had my first one I was told to use vasaline and it took ages to heal. Some artists will have tattoo cream in the shop specifically for tattoos. When I had my last one the guy gave me a pot of Tattoo Goo
to put on it and I had no problem. Thumbs Up

**Is one of the lucky ones too!** I hardly bleed!

I thought savalon was a bit of a no-go with tattooists? Thought it drew out the colour?

I don't put anything on them, Just wash with antibacterial soap 4 times a day. Scabbing is good, It's how the skin heals. I don't see why you would want to stop it.
