Has anyone here ever done it? Was it hard? How does it run and what PC are you using?

Looking at doing this on my dad's new PC to dissuade him from buying another overpriced Mac.

as far as i'm aware its entirely impossible..

macs are PPC based as opposed to 386 types..
ive been useing unbutu/linux and am very impressed with it, its very mac like in its workings and looks.
Depends what he's planning on useing it for.

Don't think macs are that pricey unless its the high end ones.. which aren't any more pricey than pcs (allthough appart from dtp or high end gfx i dont see any point in them over a low end model, at least with a pc theres the games possibility)

Sorry but you are hopelessly out of date old chap Razz Macs are now based on the Intel architecture and I have heard of people running the latest Mac OSX Leapord on a PC but I need some opinions from actual users.

I use Ubuntu myself but he's not radical enough to switch to Linux just yet Razz

Last time i looked they had the dual core thingermys? so you could switch from one to the other.. its a new one on me, i stand corrected Laughing

I'd still have thought it'd check the bios. no mac=no worky?.. maybe some kind of hackery would be needed? if it did however it'd be pretty good Very Happy

The linux thing, ive tried 4 times to get onto it and its only now i have a pc dedicated running it, much prefer it but still clinging to one windoze machine for now, its haveing a little trouble at the moment installing anything but its down to installing something else thats buggered it somehow.. i'll reinstall when i get arround to it..

Tryed suse too and liked that but couldn't for the life of me get it to network with my windows stuff, ubuntu had it all done without any input from myself.

Anyways, good luck Very Happy maybe try somewhere like www.overclockers.co.uk forums.

Yeah, should be no real problem. Might have to use linux drivers for your vid card though (and probably ndiswrapper for your network hardware).

I run Windows, OSX and Kubuntu on my MBP, for what it's worth.

I want a MAC they are white and shiny with smooth edges.
They are also as expensive as hell and crap because software is only available from legit sources and not the scanks I normaly use for PC gear.
Porn is porn no matter what the OS is IMHO.

Running Windows on a Mac is easy with bootcamp (and other methods), but getting Mac OSX on a regular PC is much more complicated. (but possible)

I never bothered trying myself (i have a MacBook anyway). Mac's have a DRM type chip on their logic/mother boards which OSX looks for which you cant get in a PC (so this requires a bit of hacking/work-around). Also Macs do not have BIOS at all, and instead run on top of EFI which needs to be worked around too.

Basically all i can say is, yes its doable, yes its difficult.

Best place to look would be this site, as these were the ones that did all the original hacking to get it working.

https://www.osx86project.org/

Also be aware that nobody actually knows if its "Legal" but it sure against Mac OSX' License agreement (even if you have a spare, purchased and unused copy)

I have a Mac, yes they're expensive, but I wouldn't say non-legit software is hard to get! Infact I'd say its as easy as windows.

Also I find there is much more good free software for Mac's too, that works and is pretty good. Things like Adium, and Mac The Ripper spring to mind.

And in answer to the original poster, yes you can run OS X on a PC, but its no where near an official version, and as far as I know only Tiger is available hacked. And not alot will run. It'll be buggy as hell too as its not running on hardware it was designed for.

Oh and Mr Z, where have you been for the last 2 years?
Apple switched to x86 in June 2006, and since late 2006 bootcamp has been available which lets Intel Macs run Windows natively. And its now available on Leopard

It's supposedly incredibly easy now. You've got to have an Intel processor though.

@Shaggy: That's just OSX running through VMWare, so it's emulated and as a result much slower than the real thing.

Yes, but it's a good way to see it in action and iron out any issues before biting the bullet.

Very true, I was just pointing out that that's not quite the real deal and won't perform as well as a normal installation.

Charlie Brooker is an idiot. He doesn't say why he hates Macs, he only hates the ad campaign...(an aside - thats just showing that the ads are actually working - the ad was memorable enough to quote and moan about)

In his article, he also says 'he hates people who use Macs'. I use a Mac, and am therefore hated by this person, who has never met me. Proliferation of this kind of unfounded hate is bad on a grand scale - well done.

Because he doesn't mention why he hates Macs the whole article turns into a bit of a rant with no real purpose other than to get himself 'in print' with a bit of controversially written opinion.

I don't care if he hates Macs, thats up to him, just tell me why, provide some more information other than 'I hate Macs'.

For the record, I also use PCs, and I'm pretty sure you'll find someone else who'll stand up and say 'I hate PCs and all who use them' and I'll reply with exactly the same argument - tell me why.

Anyone ever improve anything by merely stating they hated it?

Have an opinion by all means, but if you can't back that opinion up with anything solid, don't write it in a public forum because you'll look like a ranting idiot with an intellect of something that usually requires watering twice a day and a good amount of sunshine to grow.

Charlie Brooker is an idiot.
