dunno if you saw my other thread but i've been searching for a tracking device for my next bike and a mate told me about these from Maplins.

what do you reckon? this time theres no subscription, you basically text it/ring it and it texts you back with longitude/latitude readings. you then use google earth to find where it is.

https://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=personal%20tracker&source=15&SD=Y

you can wire it in to your existing loom/battery and it's normal battery's then act as a backup.

will definately be going to maplins to get one of these.

the other one I posted a few days ago seemed similar to this kit, but I found out the other kits charge you to look where your bike is. this time there's no charge, you basically just insert a spare pay as you go sim in (with credit on) or use an 02 sim that gives you 500 free texts.

intresting idea but in the FAQ's

Quote:
Q) Will the unit work hidden in the boot of my car (in case it gets stolen)? - Tony
A) No sorry this product does not support that.

Quote:
Q) Can it be powered by 12v to keep it permanently switched on and left in a car? - Steve
A) No it an can not.

Do you think this includes bikes??

on a bike and hidden in a metal car boot will have completely different affects on the signal, just think of it as a mobile phone.

the 12v problem can be easily fixed by asking one of the tech guys in Maplins.

But yet again you wont know its gone until its already too late and when you check the gps to get the long/lat reading you find its somewhere in a scrapyard in deepest darkest dudley.

You really aint going to go down there and get it back are you and the police arent going to take your word for it.

so you report your bikes stolen and tell them you have a tracking device on it and know where it could possibly be. giving them a printout of the directions and a screenshot from google earth.

they have to follow it up.

The 'panic' button could be interesting - wire this up to an alarm so it goes off if the bike is moved instead of the alarm sounding.

However, ideally I'd want something that alerted me if the vehicle is moved in regards to the GPS location if I had it on a specific setting.

I'm sure something like that could be hacked up by someone who knows what they're doing.
If you found a sim that gave you loads of free texts each month, then you could write a simple script that sent out a text from your PC every 2 hours or something (during times when you want to check).
Then have the returned text get handled by a script that figures out if the long/lat position is outside of a set boundary. If so, then text your personal phone.

EDIT:
Q) Will the unit work hidden in the boot of my car (in case it gets stolen)? - Tony
A) No sorry this product does not support that.

Q) Hi, you say in a previous answer that it can not be hidden in a car and used in case the car is stolen. Can you explain why this can''t be done? - Paul
A) the previous question was if it could run off 12v car power not if can be left in a car (it can be left in anything but it doesn't run of 12v car power).

Yeah - good one Laughing

top thiefs these days can buy systems that block the UHF frequancies trackers use. I fit trackers at work and we nearly got done in for "incorrect fitting" but turned out the theifs had this bit of kit... its about the size of a mobile phone aswell.
cheers

But the kit above uses mobile phone signals and GPS, so surely that won't be affected?

well it the tracker system uses GPS and GSM network signals for long range and only after that signal has been sent does the UHF signal get released. If you think that a few years back people could buy mobile phone blockers I dont think that for hard-core theifs they'd particularly care.. but tbh if a thief wants your bike they will find every way possible to sort it out.
cheers

Getting a location from a mobile isn't very accurate.
When the ambulance service track mobiles they can only get a rough idea of where you are calling from, at best they can determine the street you are on.
Police may be able to track better, as they have more money to channel into that sort of tech. but i doubt that car tracker would use police tech.

If you read the description, you'll see that it uses GPS for the location.

It isn't getting the location from the mobile, its getting the location from a GPS unit and using a phone to text it to you.

But then it wouldn't be secret.

I think the aim would be to hide it under the seat or wherever and wire it up to the battery discreetly.

Yeah, lop the lighter plug off the car charger and wire it straight into the battery (with a fuse) and then plug in the tracker.
