I dont know if i'm just being paranoid here or what.
When i was in hospital in august and september i had 3 IV's, One was overnight in the right hand and is fine. I went back 3 weeks later with an infection and had an IV put into my left arm near the inner part of the elbow, So i wasnt really bending it. After a few days they swapped it over to the right arm in the same place (I was getting 3 syringes every 6 hours of antibiotics and i cant remember the routine for the pills) but i started to use my left arm and not use my right. Once i was all well again they took that one out too (On that note i remember one of the syringe things broke, Bit of a mess...)
I'm pretty squemish so wasnt really looking but i know the IV thingys have tiny little plastic tubes...When i feel near where they were i feel hard bits, Are those the little plastic tubes or am i just being paranoid and its actually tendons? ____________________ www.oldskoolsuzuki.info |

Your veins toughen up every time a needle or cannula goes into them, it's hopefully just scarring on the vein but like kitty kat said, go see your GP or get it x-rayed to put your mind at ease. ____________________ Alli x

cos everyone else's advice is apparently wrong...... |
Your argument from the start is a load of tosh due to the fact that the cannula is not radio opaque and therefore would not be seen anyways. |
For starters, it aint "tosh" its just "inaccurate".

Hmmm, not quite sure how to say this so I'll just come out and say it...

No.... wtf!!!

A peripheral cannula is a hollow plastic tube that allows the constant or intermittent access to a vein.

In 6 years I have never seen one break despite many a time ramming the introducing needle through the tip.

In the 38 years my old dear has worked for NHS (started as a nurse worked hard now she runs the NHS for Merseyside) apparently it does happen, has happened, and has happened to me. I put my arm through a window when i went arse over tit on my skateboard and had to get stitched up and stuff..... Luckily it was a straight snap and could be removed with ease.
WTD, I don't want to fall out with you. I've only been a member for a very short while. But dude, please don't tell me to shut the fuk up. Just cos u aint seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I am only giving my opinion and advice based on my experiences to try and help some-one who is obviously very concerned about it.

I've never had one break either despite my patients not sitting still, pulling on their IV lines and biting at their catheter sites (vets use exactly the same ones as doctors). I would imagine if one did break off the hub, it would be more likely to come out than go in.
The fact that they were changing it every so often could also imply they were using a highly irritant drug which causes scarring of the vein.
I think it would be fair to say that if it did snap off, it wouldn't stay at the insertion site but would move elsewhere.
Most IV catheters are made of PTFE these days due to its non-reactive properties, It is also a very strong material.
Some of the DO have a radioopaque stripe built into them. I know because I have some in my car. I suspect this is for angiography purposes more than to find a 'lost' one. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. Pah.
Lets look at the evidence...
The Chief Exec of the North West NHS is Mike Farrar MBE. Unless your mum has had a sex change, this is not her.
Immediately your statement of your mum running the NHS for Merseyside is incorrect - she is not the boss.
But hey, I'm bored, and have some time free (and getting paid for it) so lets go a bit deeper.
The ony women on the board are as follows:
Sally Cheshire - She is a non-exec, and as such has no power to 'do' anything, so even if this is your mam (unlikely since she never mentiones ever working as a nurse), your statement is again false.
Jo-Anne Wass - Public Affairs Director. Has only worked for the NHS for 20 years, so can't be your mum, who is nearly twice as experienced.
Jane Cummings (bit of a MILF actually) - Director of Nursing, Performance and Quality. If this is your mum, then she looks fucking good for someone who has worked for 38 years in the NHS - she only looks 38, and as I said, I would definitely hit it. She still doesn't run the show though.
Mandy Wearne - A likely candidate to be momma CaNsA, a qualified nurse and midwife, looks about the right age, but what's this - born in 1961, she's only 46, therefore could not have done the 38 years service you state. PLUS she does not run the whole deal. No joy here then.
Dr Ruth Hussey - Another potential candidate, again a qualified medic, however she was born in 1956, making her 51, meaning she woudl have to have started working in the NHS at 13 to have done 38 years, so not her then. Oh, and the fact that she does not run the NHS for merseyside.
So, after all that, what can we conclude? Oh, yes, that my gut feeling that you were talking out of your arse was correct.
Your mum does not run the NHS for Merseyside.
She may have done very well, and risen to a high position, be very good at her job, and have a good deal of responsibility, but again, I say again she does not run the NHS.
Saying she runs it implys she has total control, which is bollocks, and is what I objected to. |

This one seems to be getting somewhat nasty...
*gets some popcorn*
By this time JKR has long since died of horrible complications arising from topic being jacked and his veins comploding... (only kidding but as with all its probably nothing but no GP will be annoyed at you going in just in case)
And Luke its good they didnt take the standard junkie method of finding a spare vein... think mother superior in trainspotting ____________________ Previous - Gilera DNA50 / XVS125 Dragstar/Honda CBR 600F/GSF 650 Bandit
