I see your R1 and raise you a 1970s 400, restricted to 33bhp.

How's the insurance working out for you?

I'm 18 and I was considering one... I'll get a 600 in the end though, but only cause I can't afford the insurance for an R1

If you got a bit of cash to spare or you can save it up then why not? I'm saving for an R6 and a scrap heap of a car, I'm 19 too. It's just normal to want more/better stuff even if you don't need it.

LOL, G was mad when a bit younger, but he waited until he was a more sensible age before he bought a tuned ZX9R! Wink

doesn't mean he was sensible...

My opinions on this are well known. I strongly believe that you cannot learn to ride a bike like that unless you have experience on smaller bikes first. I think that it ends up with you riding fast in a straight line and little else. Buying an R1 at 19 is nothing more than an expensive game of top trumps, unless you have the riding experience to back it up.

No, I'm 19 and have an 02 Mille.

I have done the smaller steps thing to an extent though. This is my third bike.

wave2k had a 749 at 19/20 I think. Thinking

Very true indeed, hence the 600 before I get a thou, would get a 250/400 but I wouldn't have them long so it's cheaper to get a 600 and learn most stuff on that. Wise all the same. Karma

I totally agree, that's why I bought the bikes I did at my ages:

16 = Full Power Aprilia RS50 > 17= Full Power Aprilia RS125 > 18= Full Power Honda CBR 400.

If you are jumping straight onto an R1/ have little previous experience, I expect you'll be dead before long...

St3v3 and Fahd, its nice to hear your voices of experience on these matters! Wink

The thing about this forum is, when you ask this kind of question the responses fall into the following five categories:

1.) No response from the 'old skool' members who think the forum has gone to shit

2.) Buy a (japanese sports 6 or thou) cos I own it therefore its the best bike ever. ( notice no supporting argument!)

3.) occasional responses from Safety facists, but it seems that the safety facists on the forum swing wildly from "I'm mental, me. I ride my litre/600 sports at nine thousand miles an hour!" to "You can't go out without leathers, you'll die and they won't even be able to identify the body! - Kittens etc. I personally have the latest 2008 Alpinestars/fashionista ZYX5A leathers therefore I'm safe - plus I'm hardcore so its OK!"

4.) Responses from the young'uns: "I agree you should do it like that, I have absolutely no basis for my opinion, but I don't care/realise that is the case."

and 5) very rarely you actually get a sensible answer from someone who has ridden the bike you're asking about and has some riding experience.

Tell me it isn't true.

I actually think the forum would be a much better place if the lofty 'old skool' types who have some riding experience and stuff, actually stuck their oars in occasionally *ahem* Shaun *ahem* even if I don't agree with what they are saying! Laughing

I'd like to point out, I'm not devaluing the opinions of relatively new riders, but they have to realise they aren't authorities on all subjects. Some culprits are worse than others!

*ahem* XlonewolfX *ahem*

As a lofty old skool member with a few years experience, I offer the following suggestion.

Its January. The roads are greasy. The R1 puts out more power than my car, and the contact patch on an R1 is around 20% of the contact patch on an MR2. My MR2 has been going sideways a lot recently, and pulling away without spinning up the tyres requires planning and caution.

So I see you coming out of a 30 limit into an NSL and cracking the throttle open. The back spins up, the bike lunges sideways in an instant, you snap the throttle shut and it'll probably correct itself.

Unfortunately, you will have shat yourself at this instant, and will spend the next 6 months being scared of the power, and cornering like a pussy.

To echo the advice of everyone with any experience, in any thread like this (and we get one a week, which is why the old skool started ignoring them 2 years ago). Learn to ride, then learn to ride fast, then get a bike to match your skills. With your current experience, and the weather conditions for the next few months, you'd probably be faster, comfier, and richer if you went for a CBR6 or thundercat.

Also, CBR6s are quite quick. Ask marj about the time I rode one...

To the original post, I'd consider carefully why you want one even if you can afford it. Eventually after you've whizzed up and down a few times you'll (probably...) get used to the speed and may wish that you went for something which was better at touring for example.

From a youn'gun point of view, I'd say the OP wants it for the power/speed/looks, only cos this is why I want an R6/CBR6. Wink

Marjay, I never dis-agree with advice such as yours/ Shauns because I know it's a voice of reason/experience talking, but as you said the older better 'equipped' people got bored and stopped answering these a long time ago, forming the "i have no experience but it seems good so screw it" view, not saying this is their fault, it isn't but we need that review idea building up IMO.

In answer to the first question, it's not nuts!

I think R1Lad had 2 x 03 R1's! I don't know where he's gone off to these days. I think he passed his test at 17, rode a gixxer 6 SRAD and went onto an R1 (00 and 03 i think?) the moment he hit 19 and was allowed to ride any bike.

If you can still get in contact with him then, that will answer Marjay's Point number 5! Wink Razz. He was proof that it was dooable at 19.

To be honest, there are quite a few people here who have had litre bikes by the age of 19/20 and it's all about how you personally feel you can cope. Me? I'm not mature enough to ride on a thou, given my banzai history when riding in a group.

so WHERE IS R1Lad?

He must have disappeared off the face of the forum predicting that there would be a whole bunch of twats who would appear to be authoritative figures Wink

A 19 year old, able to afford an R1 and a lot of rent if I remember correctly, living in Crawley.

I wouldn't be hugely surprised if he's doing 3 years for dealing.
