PostPosted: 17:55 - 10 Jan 2008    Post subject: I'm so excited. *UPDATE PICTURE* Reply with quote

Me Julie saw two Golden Retriever needing a good home , on the notice board at work, so I rang up about them today, the owner said would we like to come round and take them for a walk... Which we duly did, both are pedigree males 4 year old brothers, we was only looking for one dog but after meeting them... I thought it would be wrong to part them, as it was... they are loosing their family (they are moving to a city) so after a discussion I rang the owner back and said we would like to take them both... Which he seemed pleased that they will be staying together... But I could feel the heartache that he was losing his beloved dogs, I felt his pain Sad

so we said if it was convenient for him and is family we could pick them up tomorrow. He said he would sort his end out and would call us to confirm tomorrow was good.

They are beautiful dogs, named Alfie and Harvey. I'm really excited about it... But have this sadness inside me about the family that are loosing their dogs...

they will have a great home with us which I tod the chap. but it's gota be real sad for them... Which is why I said we would take the pair and keep them together.

I will post pictures as soon as possible. so we know just wait for tha telephone call to say everything is sorted come and pick them up.

Anyone got any advise about Golden Retrievers...

And yes I will pick their doggie poo up Wink

crosses fingers they don't change their minds Sad

ps: I asked want he wanted for them monie wise, he said we could make a donation to the RSPCA... So I will give him £100 sobs to do what he wants to do with it.

Good luck with them, depending on their breeding they will either be pretty chilled, or absolute maniacs !

Alot depends on how they've been brought up, expect the worst and any good behaviour will be a massive bonus.

Hawk up on rescue dogs, make sure you know any potential problems that could come your way.

We took on a 5 year old rescue Viz in November, took him a good 2 weeks to even begin to settle in, now hes pretty good, although letting him of the lead is a big no no atm.

As for his reason for getting rid, imo what a crock of poop, moving to the city. In my experience cities generally have better facilities for dog walking, training etc.

Hopefully everything will work out well for you. Let us know how you get on. Thumbs Up

Tell them that should they ever wish to, then they are very welcome to come and see the dogs again. My dad recently gave my choc. lab away without even telling me (only recently moved south and he was lumped with it). It is at least some consolation that if they do want to see the dogs again then they/he can.

I haven't seen my dog for about 5 months now since he was given away. But at least I can and it's kind of comforting to be honest.

As for golden retrievers, just as shell shock has said, either chilled out or manic - i love them. Wish I could have a dog in London.

They are very chilled I sat on the floor in his kitchen and they just rest their paws and head on you, the owner said they will do that for hours without moving, I also think dogs should have some spirit...

He is something to do with computer science, and works in Manchester... The dogs definitely come from a good home their might be an alternative motive.. I don't know but it's our gain, they have all the papers and have that chip thing me bob witch he said he would get transferred to our address.

Right the owner is bringing them around today at 2pm... probably to asses their new enviroment, so hopefully everything goes ok... My excitement has turned to nervous tension, hopefully I will come back later to update you with good news... well good news for me.

Don't feel guilty, if it wasn't you it would be someone else, their choice to get shut, your gain.

I wouldn't feel bad about it. It seems to have worked out well for everyone, including the dogs.

Hang on a second. Don't feel bloody guilty. They're ditching the dogs for the sake of a job or something. Some dog owners I know would die for their dogs. What would they do if they had kids? Would they still go the for job if it was to make them unhappy? Sounds like it.

Also don't forget the dogs will have a big attachment to the owners. Suddenly they're wondering where the owners they would also probably protect with their lives has gone. Letting them see the dogs is a bad idea, if only for the dogs sake.

I don't feel Guilty it was just an emotion when she burst in to tears,

I have not said they could come and see them as I agree with you on that one flat spot.
But just piece of mind to them that their beloved dogs are being cared for...

yes they were waiting for a treat in that picture,

Don't feel guilty. Anyone that would give their dogs up for that reason, doesn't merit sympathy, IMO. I work in a vets and some people just shouldn't get dogs - good on you for giving them a lioving home, and best of luck with them, they are gorgeous!

hope they give you years of fun, I had to rehome 4 cats and a rough collie when i moved to saudi, broke my heart but I know they all went to fabulous homes, I got regular letters and photos of them all and cried everytime i did.

When in saudi i adopted a feral kitten but didnt bring him home with me,broke my heart again but hed not have coped with quarantine and a busy city after living on a small compund in the middle of the desert, still made sure he went to a good home before i left though, now the cats i have are with me for the duration, i vowed never to be in a position where i had to give them up.

To be fair, im against people who own dogs in big cities. My ex just got a lab puppy and they live in central liverpool...

I got the honour of taking it for a walk in the welsh country side on a foot long traffic leash (armed with the knowledge it would fuck off if i let it off). Never seen a dog so excited in my life. Pretty thoroughly guilty i couldnt let it run free, or at least with a long enough leash to not be straining constantly.

Never mind.

Eventually i am sure i'll get a dog, but knowing what there temperaments are like id have to get one that was old enough to see what it was like. And it would have to be at a time when i had plenty of time to take them for walks etc.

For anyone looking for a REALLY well behaved loving dog, id suggest contacting the greeks. There stray dogs are fantastic, never bark, very loving and in desperate need of good homes. There are now programs to deport them to germany, and id imagine theyd send them to england easily enough.
