He's seen common sense. There is the tiniest smidgen of hope for our wholly american-ised nanny state...well maybe. I'll believe it when i see it.

Somebody must have sent him a link to this site and given him a dose of reality.

So it's just another beurocratic group set up to waste time and money to not get anything done properly, great.

Quote:
Defensive labelling — of which the nut allergy warning on bags of peanuts is an example — is in its sights. Somewhat unnecessarily, the council says that such warnings are “laughable” and breed resentment.

This breeds resentment? I know we've all had a time when we've read our bag of nuts and noticing the warning only to narrowly escape a fit of rage at the nazi health and safety regime but there are bigger problems. Speed cameras anyone?

He's full of shit, they'll do something small and insignificant then pretend they've made a difference then it will all be forgotten about.

Hurrah! We'll be allowed our christmas lights back because some bone idle halfwit has figured out they won't tear down a lamppost. Pathetic.

So he's renamed a body who will be staffed by the same muppets as now and will carry on as before.

Rick Haythornthwaite, who heads the council, has made his name and fortune out of the risk involved in investing in private equity.

Not exactly a good grounding for the task.
Sure he must have made plenty of ££ out of it and is now raking it in in this new role.....

Common sense would dictate dump the lot of them.....

Impossible, hell even the old HMRC boss who jacked it in when the 2 discs went missing was in another senior civil service job a week later.

Yeh just heard about that on Radio2. We can safely assume that any website which is anti-establishment will be deemed as extremist. Of course, some fascists will agree that certain websites should be deleted.

All talk. The safety nazis are still there, as this part of the article shows:-

There will be disappointment that Mr Brown’s response to such killjoy acts is not to halve the number of health and safety officials or revise the hundreds of regulations introduced under this Labour Government.

A point of thought occured to me in that is the reason we , when I say WE I mean the UK in general has declined so badly in recent times that we are no longer a nation of risk takers and have become risk adverse to such an extent that we have atrophied?.

This Risk and Regulation Advisory Council won't make much difference at all.

I think much of the new health and safety regulations and organizations fear of these regulations arises from the fear of being sued in court. This in itself stems from when the Government of the day decided to remove the need for people to apply for legal aid to sue for personal injuries. The legal aid council acted as a kind of unofficial filter which filtered out silly and ridiculous claims for personal injury compensation eg someone being hit on the head and injured by a pear falling from a pear tree on local authority owned property (an actual case). If you couldn't get legal aid and wanted to sue, you personally had to fund the case out of your own pocket. So you would only do this if you had a good chance of winning.

After legal aid was stopped the no win, no fee solicitors took over. Organizations such as local authorities are really afraid of the cost of defending cases now so as soon as they get a compensation claim from a no win no fee solicitor they often settle out of court as this is cheaper than fighting the case, never mind the cost of fighting the case and then having to pay damages as well if they lose. The solicitor gets his fee, the client gets his damages.

Because of this the Government has introduced many more health and safety laws. Also organizations and local authorities apply health and safety laws much more rigorously. This in effect protects organizations and local authorities from being sued in the first place as it prevents people from even taking up/being exposed to the risky activity.

It may of course be wrong, just a theory on why Britain has suddenly become such a silly nanny state in recent years.

I think thats a fairly decent theory , people afraid to be sued.

Maybe advertising laws should be changed regarding no win no fee types, in that on the surface it says no win no fee, but dig a little deeper and it really means YOUR lawyer won't charge you but the other side's lawyers will utterly rape you if you lose.

Or perhaps that councils actually start fighting these cases and when they win utterly annilate the person who had no case. Bit like banks who have various fees and charges.
