Taking my first foray into Djing......

Hiya guys,

I've just taken my first steps into DJing, and downloaded a hundred odd quid of tracks, which I've bee drooling over the past few month. I'm now in the position of having the toons but not the means to mix em!

Initialy I was considering getting a midi controller to mix with in combination with a laptop. Way I figure a CDJ is basically a CPU driven piece of equipment so I see no real need to use a CDJ when a midi controller such as this https://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/TorqXponent-main.html

Now bear in mind, I would be buying this as an introduction to Djing. It would allow me to learn to beat match, mix, scratch etc without the massive outlay required for CDJ's, mixers etc.

However, I've yet to find a Midi controller such as the above that is of any decent build quality. From reports, they feel lke a toy more than anything else and hardware failure is noted problem.

So I'm just wanting opinions on the various pieces f kit out there. I may even consider the outlay of 2K for cdjs and mixers if that is the way forward. However my concern is moving the shit around, given I am in Penang at present.

I would not consider Vinyl however as to be frank, after having spoke to various professional, big name DJ's, vinyl is dead in the water, with the decks being relegated in many clubs to being nothing more than an expensive beer matt and ultimately playing a few sets around Leeds would be my goal (a Sunday afternoon set at the legendary Stinkies would be a fucking crowning achievement To all you who knows what I mean).

lol, I'm currently residing in Penang so I doubt I'm in any danger from him. Besides if I did live next door to him and he complained I'm sure I could arrange a 'dirt nap' for him under the patio.

Drag and drop MP3's in to the program, wire it to two decks and a mixer and you've got infinate music on vinyl.

Torq is the software supplied with the Xponent. Are you reffering to linking up either vinyl decks or a cdj to the Torq stuff?

My mate was paid Dj rates at new years and used Torq.

He’s got 2 X Techinics 1200’s, one mixer (cant remember the make). 1 X laptop. And full Torq system.

You have two boxes on the software screen, once this is all plugged into the decks through the Torq box you drag and drop your MP3’s from windows to the left or right deck and the tune appears with timing bars in sound wave form. You use the Torq vinyl to que the track and you can mix the two MP3’s. After a bit of practice you can get tunes to mix fairly easily using the software, you can scratch, stop, start the vinyl just as you would a purchased single.
My mate has a huge hard drive with all the music he needs for playing out.

Pitch can be controlled ont he deck as normal, it reads it in real time, no delay.

So it communicates with the torq vinyl to monitor the pitch.

That is fucking awesome.

I have used CDJ and MP3 'decks', but they're just no good compared with the intuitive interface of a good old turntable.
