ZX7R or ZX9R or OTHERS??

Right then, will be looking for a new bike in the next couple of months and want to know which people prefer? ZX7R Ninja (97 onwards) or ZX9R Ninja (99 model). Or any other which may be a good choice. Needs to be bigger than 600cc and also needs to have separate rider/pillion seats.

Get a 7R, then when you want more power, chuck a 9R motor in there - apparently its an easy swap, and there are companies which supply custom mounts to make it easy.

Depends what you want out of a bike.

I loved my ZX9 - probably shouldnt have sold it. From what I gather its a lot comfier than a 7R, but I havent ridden one to compare. Certainly you can do big mileages on the 9R in comfort, but it depends if you're bothered about that or not.

How about a Thunderace? I loved mine, good for scratchin and touring 2 up, plenty of power as well.

The ZX9R C model, which is the 99 model onwards seem like a very accomplished bike and will do everything you ask of it. Some may say that they are boring! I personally would go for the 9R since they are more sensible.

The ZX7R has WSB kudos courtesy of Scott Russell winning countless AMA superbike championships on it and also doing the 93 WSB title on it. As a result, many of them are usually ridden by youngsters and thrashed accordingly. Good bike mind and they hold their value mind. It's a bit porky and a ZX9R 99 onwards is much lighter - 183 dry compared to the 210kg odd for the 7R. I believe if you wanted to do an engine swap, it's for the ZX9R B1-B4 motors which produce 129 bhp stock.

I'd say head goes for the 9R, heart goes with the 7R - possibly the best road tool out there, planted, stable and plenty of power.

Talk to Tatters about a thunderace, apparently it burns a LOT of oil!

I'd say get a 7 but that's only because I have one and love it!

I'm in the process of making the riding position less extreme, with Lucas footpeg adjuster plates and by doing a conversion with Renthal drag bars and Raask bar adapters.

Planning on doing a 2-up trip to Italy on it this summer so need it to b comfier!!

People might say "Why don't you just buy a different bike?" but It's a bike I've always wanted and don't want to get rid of it. It's an icon in my eyes!

If you just want a "blast" bike, it's perfect!

(plus, the bike remained unchanged over 7 years so plenty of spares)

as had been said it depends what you want, the 9r is MASSIVE in comparison to the 7 which itself isnt small to begin with, 9r is way more comfortable, has more power, and more torque, and more pliant suspesnsion, all of this makes it a better road bike for the real world, the 7r is a beautifull bike, id go so far as to say its probably the preetyest bike kawasaki have ever made the front end is as sure footed as you can get for the era, despite its size though its most definetly not comfortable, heels are up by your ass, and its a long reach to the bars, expect lower back, knee wrist and neck pain if doing anymore than 80ish miles in one go oh and despite beeing more softly suspended than the zxr, its still on the nut cracking end of the firm scale. the engine is alot revyer than the 9, and makes about 15- 20 bhp and 10ft/lbs less it has similar topend power too a modern 600, but more torque and a noticably fatter midrange. A 9r engine in a 7r is a glorious beast to ride building one myself at the moment but im using a zxr j as a base, easyer to convert and its lighter and handels better anyway! but its not cheap to do and wont add resale value, only reason to do it is if you love the 7r and just want a bit more usable grunt.

personally id get the 7r as i prefer a more focussed sportsbike despite the fact that the 9 is undoubtedly a better road going bike. plus the 7r is modern day classic in the making im sure of it. oh and all of the 9r's are pig ugly

over the years ive had most of the jap sports bikes from 600cc up, ive just gone back to a 2001 zx7r with a few goodies, ok loads of goodies 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7

Go for the 7R........... I used to have one and I loved every second. So much front end grip, it gave me huge confidence, and still looks the part today (unlike the ugly 9R with its' pouting lips at the front ).

There are so many different bikes to choose from the choise is really what feels right for you
