Hi, I have a 2002 NSR 125 RR.

My battery went flat, I charged it, couple of days later it went flat again so I replaced the battery.

Today I was riding the bike and noticed that the indicators were not working correctly, they wern't flashing unless the revs were right up around 5 thousand.

When I turned off the bike the battery is dead, will not turn over the starter.

I suspect that I have a problem with the alternator, Is there any easy way to check out the system and determine what the fault is?

Anyone sufferered a similar fault and fould a simple problem that was causing it?

Thanks in advance.

if you have a voltage meter then put it over the battery you should be reading 13-14 volts for a 12 volt system when revving it to about 2000 rpm or 6.5-8 for a 6 volt system. these are rough guides some were near will be ok if it is pushing out less or much more then you probably have a problem with your regulator. hope that helps Very Happy

The fact your electrics are working when the bike is running suggests your alternator is fine and doing it's job. Replace the battery it should be fine. If the indicators are still dicky then make sure they're all working and the same voltage/wattage.

The indicators were working fine when I first started the bike, but after riding for 15min I noticed that they were playing up. This problem didn't just affect the indicators the headlight brigthness was also waivering up and down as the engine was reved.

I have only done 20 miles since I fitted a new battery.

I will remove it and give it a good charge and see how things go.

Its just that this is the second battery that this has happened too now.

But the bike has stood fro 2 months since I fitted the new battery so maybe that could be the problem?

I just find it strange that the bike started fine, the stasrter seemed strong, lights were on prior to hitting the start button. Rode for 15min and then the battery is as flat as a pancake.

Thanks for the replies b.t.w

3 possibilities :
- alternator stator is worn
- regulator is dead
- something is draging the battery (wiring damage)
download my file https://www.geneva-racing.com/~alains/NSRtips.doc
then look about ignition bugs how to test alternator

As above, maybe the wiring has shorted something, but that light brightening is when your revving the engine, giving more power to the alternator, which feeds it to the electrics(in a way) as and when there's no battery there(or not working).
