Hey this isn't actually a problem but a while ago i had a rebore done and when i got home and cleaned the barel out with wd40 then wiped it down with water and dried it.
I left it for a while to make sure it was all dry before i put it back in the engine, but when i came to put it in i found a thin layer of rust inside the barrel!

I tried to wipe it down again with some more wd40 but couldn't get it off.

Anyway it has been in my engine now for the past 3k miles and hasn't caused any problems, just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

I had to dig a 6 cyl. diesel engine cylinder head out of 12" of snow one morning.
I wiped off the snow. Checked the head was OK and clashed the engine together.

It's been running fine ever since.

Anyone else?

Well, I would have either left the WD40 on it or wiped round the bore with some light oil. Why on earth did you decide to wipe it with water?

Being very light rust, it probably just acted like honing marks and seated the rings nicely.

If the same had happened to me, I would have wiped it down with an oily rag, run the honing tool through it then rinsed it in solvent and oiled it again before fitting.

Just a heads up: after I bore cylinders I clean em up & then wipe down the bores with ATF to protect em.

a few hours, there may still have been some moisture inside but not in any of the important bits like inside the barrel, i cleaned that thoroughly.
I never would have believed rust could form that quick, it literally appeared in seconds, it did not effect the bore in any way other then making it look a bit discoloured.
It was a bit stupid wiping it down with water, but i never expected a little bit of water to do that so quickly.

thats what i asked my tit of a father when i got home to find him submerging my petrol tank with the filler cap removed in a bucket of water washing it ready for paint. the inside of my tank is mank now, and like this, it formed within minutes.
