...or at least I think I have.
Usually, when I opened the choke before starting her up in the morning, the engine would 'race' at high revs for a short while (at 2k for maybe ten seconds or so), but over time this has stopped happening, and over the last week or so, when I open the choke fully and start her up, she just ticks over at her usual idle speed - 1,5k or so - even when it's really cold. She's not garaged, she sleeps under the stars, but I do keep her covered.
I had her checked over yesterday (for unrelated matters) and I asked the guy at the garage to check it but they couldn't find anything wrong, and also said it was hard to diagnose a problem with the choke when the bike is warm. Anyhow, it's as if the cable has 'stretched' or just isn't working as it used to. Sure, it still helps me to start her up on a cold morning, but she still sounds a bit 'boggy' and uneven, like she might cut out at any minute. And if I don't use the choke, she won't idle at all until I've been riding for at least a few minutes. Even then, she doesn't seem to tick over quite like she used to...
Before I take her back to the garage, does anyone have any idea of what might be wrong? I've read somewhere before (perhaps on here) something about cleaning the carb(s)... could that be the problem/solution?

Cable stretch is possible but you need to check the correct setting by removing the carb Stop stop... edit NOOOOOO the air filter.
The mechanic just didn't want the hassle.
Do you have a Haynes (Book of Serious Hand Injuries) for the bike? If not get one.

Thanks. I dont think Mr Haynes bothered writing a manual for this... it's only a CBR125, perhaps not much to go wrong with them?
I'm not very 'hands on' when it comes to fixing stuff like this, hence I usually leave it to the garage. If someone were to tell me this was quite normal, I wouldn't bother taking her back there for a second opinion. Sometimes it's good to have an idea of what the problem is first, they spot eejits like me from a mile away ... |

Where is you choke lever? I've known the Carb end of mine 'pop out' of it's little holder bit thingy, so it has similar symptoms. Just look at the top side of the carb and check all wire cables in the outer covers are correctly seated in their little nozzly 'nipple' bits around the top of the carb.
Scyooze the explicit term there.
In fact, as you can see on this pic, the gold nut bit is adjustable.... check it looks right.

You should be able to get a Haynes manual from your local library. If it's not on the shelf ask at the desk as they may be able to reserve it for you. Costs about 40p.
I just picked up an RX-S manual from the library, just need to scan it in and turn it into a PDF file now |
