Was in town today and saw 2 SV650's, which look great (although one was better, I think it didnt have a pillion seat making the whole back end shorter than the back wheel; if that makes sense, please expand on whether this is a mod or design change or me going mad Very Happy ).

When I got home I got out my copy of Used Bike Guide to check what they say about it, insurance groups etc. I couldn't find it in there, anyone know which section it is in? Anyway, while looking in the naked section I noticed that the lowest (as in worst, just called Monster 600 I think) Duke Monster isn't too expensive if you go for an older one, and it is only insurance group 10.

Why have I NEVER seen any young people riding Ducati's? The stats (insurance group, price etc) are similar to other more 'normal' bikes, so why don't people get them?

Cheers, Joe

Edit: Forgot to mention, if I did get one, I would either be 17 or 18 years old.

probably since they are rarer to begin with thus there is much less of a 2nd hand market for them , while Honda, Suzi , kwak and yam are loads of them (comparatively).

Also Stink has/had a mate who had a duke , he had to fix it so often it drained all the joy out of riding , I had a similar spat meself early on in the month I was constantly repairing stuff and even I got disillusioned with it all (and I'm the type who rides in any weather , even if the brakes /suspension are broken etc) ,

Ooooh a good excuse to show off my SV. If it looked like the seat in my pic.... then its a seat pod. You take the standard pillion seat off and clip the seat pod on. Really easy... and putting standard seat back on... simple too.

Oh and the sv650 is insurance group 9.

Thanks you two Karma . Good point there Itchy, about reliability. BanditBitch (or should that be SVBitch? Wink ), thanks for saying about the seat pod, it looked just like yours Very Happy. How much would your bike go for at the moment if you don't me asking?

Get yourself over to www.ukmonster.co.uk

Don't listen to stories of unreliability, the air cooled Ducatis are almost bulletproof. They also sound fantastic and handle very very well, are cheap to buy and run too.

Sterotypical impressions of build quality and servicing costs.

Not sure if the price of Ducati parts (if you drop one) become an issue either.

As 600's go the Monster is underpowered. 85 hp from a hornet and about 55 from an M600. They are also lumpy and quite difficult for an inexperienced rider to manage. They have loads of character though, they are easy to work on, no bodywork to damage (although the tank will get dinted of the bike falls over) and parts are generally quite reasonably priced.
Supply has dried up a bit becasue of the Desmo Due racing series that the DSC have been running for the past few years.

I remember being told Monster where good bikes for when you had your two year restriction.

Not sure how well they take the restriction but I am sure it will be just like most bikes - fine but you can tell its restricted.

Just rare I thinkwell that and stories from bygone models regarding reliability, owners in the last ten years seem to have been fairly happy.

I think they are great, definately a bike that could draw me away from Hondas. Ducati do some pretty lookng bikes (and some right pigs)

The SV is an easier bike to ride and there are more about to choose from second hand. Suzuki are usually very competitive price wise new as well. If you want to be different get a Ducati, the air-cooled engines are relatively lumpy around town which can be a bit frustrating, if you want a good V-twin that does everything ok get an SV.

My flat mate had one, I've know the guy for three years now and it has never been right. He has just got it serviced at ducati and asures me it is fine now, when I rode it it was probably one of the worst bikes I have ever ridden, but he assures me it's fine now.

I considered it, But then I thought about it, and its a lot of money to throw away that I simply didn't have.

And I'd always be seen as that prick with the ducati poser, and it would attract unwanted attention from charvers.

The only reason you get an 848 is because you can't afford a 1098 Laughing

You mean the fancy ducati chassis'?

Ducati, or ducati, all other manufacturers view them as pointless and too complicated. I also personally view than as potentially being weak to take excess weight or to withstand damage in an accident.

And you can get an 848, use your money, buy a gun, go mug grannies on a tuesday and have it on finance over 20 years Thumbs Up

OR

Find the house deed to your parents house and sell it with fake ID.

The 600 monster is surprisingly sluggish.

That's why they are cheap to insure.

I seem to recall the clutch requires forearms like Popeye to ride in town.

Look good, sound good, reportedly handle fairly well but all bark and no bite. I'd imagine they'd be rather ok as a restricted bike.

You mean a trellis frame?
TRX850 has one.

My personal favourite is the SDR200 but good luck finding one because they are rare as rocking horse poo. Truly a thing of beauty though. Even have a trellis swingarm.
