Evening motorcycle types, having a minor friendly tiff so instead of talking it through like adults I decided to stick it on a public forum Very Happy .

Anyway the situation involves four guys, I'll call them Mr A, B, C and D to protect identities, we're uni students looking at a house for next year and yesterday morning Mr A and Mr B looked at a 4 bedroom house, 2 on the ground floor, 2 upstairs, 1 of which had a nice view, as they left the house Mr B called shotgun on the room with the view.

That evening after all four decided on that house it got sorted, so we'll live there next year. However Mr A said that since neither Mr C nor Mr D were there it was unfair that Mr B got to call shotgun on the view room, and pointed out they should draw straws for it, despite the fact Mr C didn't care and Mr D was unavailable.

Bear in mind halfway through December Mr B gave up one of his sundays to sit on public transport for four hours in full bike gear then rode a 30 year old cg for five hours through the most unpleasant conditions he's ever biked in, as a favour to Mr A. Razz

So who gets the room, does the shotgun stand, or should it be randomly allocated.

And as I know someone will point out that a house of four guys arguing over a view isn't really the most masculine thing posted on the forum I'll get all the jokes over with shall I:
Do each other up the garry.
Why do you need a view when www.tylersroom.com is mere clicks away. [edit: dont click that btw, its a gay website for comedic purposes]
Man up.

Answers on a postcard, and if Mr A sees this, which he will; Razz Middle Finger

You have to be within sight of the shotgun object. Whoever isn't there, isn't there.

Real man settle it with rock paper scissors though. Cool

Shotgun only counts for who gets to go in the front passenger seat of a car.

For picking rooms in a house, Id suggest adjusting the rents so that the one with the nicest room pays a bit more, and the others pay a bit less. That way everyone else benefits by allowing the person with the deepest pockets or who wants it most to have it.

The same would go in reverse if there was a tiny box room.

When I was at uni, in one place i had the biggest room and paid a bit more than everyone else, and in another place i had the tiny box room, and paid a bit less than everyone else.

Its a good system that works well.

oh and put a not work safe tag by that link please

I'm in agreement with Colin.

It's one of the only ways to stop people complaining. You want it, You pay for it.

totally agree with colin1 - friends did this when they were at uni and it worked well.

Shotgun rules: everyone (Person A, B, C, D) has to be present at the time of shotgun if they are involved.
BUT: since C is not bothered, s/he can be elimited and shotgun has to start again. Hardly "shotgun experience" if it has to be 'reloaded'...so i guess you'll have to discuss it.

We had a similar situation, Im living in a shared uni house with 4 other guys, 5 bedrooms

One is on the ground floor with two massive windows and has cars and people going past all the time, but the room is the biggest,

Then my room above it is the second largest,

There is a little box room next to mine and a room next to the living room,

We all sat down said which each other wanted and then basically decided that as myself and one other guy are the only ones with girlfriends we get the largest rooms so we can stick double beds in there, everyone was cool about that and i believe the rest did rock paper scissors for the dregs Wink

As for calling shotgun on a room, fuck that,

Shotgun is for car trips, and we do it so you can only call shotgun once there is definately going to be a car trip... So

Me: We going shopping now man i got no fuckin food in the house
Housemate with car: Yea cool lets roll
Me: SHOTGUN

Followed by much "you bastard"

Also shotgun is acceptbale in the negative sense ie

Everyones sitting down playing Pro Evo and someone wants to change the game or wants someone to do something, last one to call "Shotgun not doing....." does it...

Interesting split of opinions there, any suggestions on what a view should cost, bearing in mind it's £65 p/w non inclusive, oh and the room with the view is on the first floor, and the kitchen is in the basement, so there's twice as much stairs for the two people up there.

And Matt, don't talk about the garage, cos I really think thats a bit more important than a view, and should probably be settled in person.

Is the £65 a week for the house or for the room?

I'd be inclined to charge 2.50 per week more for the Largest room and View Room (Tenner a month) and the same amount less for the smaller, less desirable rooms.

You could always make the person who has the garage pay a fiver a week and put it towards the water rates or something.

Shotgun is only ever called to get dibs on front passenger seat in a car, I get it every Sunday when we have to get 4 fully grown lads in the back of my Fiesta for football.

Luckily I drive, so don't have to remember to shotgun.

Remember you can only call shotgun once you can see the car!
