Hiya guys,
My cat has had a large growth on his paw for a few months now and we were told the only option was to amputate his paw. Anyway he got took to the Vet today and they've booked him in for next tuesday and I'm not going to be there as I'm in Asia at the minute and will not be back till Friday.
Has anyone else had to deal with their animal having to get an amputation? I'm worried the op may kill him or leave him suffering and I wouldn't want that.

I'm a bit upset really Sad

Animals are very good at adapting.

Operations are always a worry for any pet owner but I wouldn't think an amputations is as worrisome as an invasive type operation.

Your cat will be fine. If the only problem is this growth, then there will be no problem with the anasthetic, and it will adapt very quickly to life on 3 legs.

Remember that cats dont really have a sense of self pity as a rule. They will play the cards they're dealt, be it with 3 legs or 4. Don't worry at all Smile

My cat is completely without a tail.... it was bitten off by its mother at birth (silly moggy!) and it still manages to live a normal feline life sans tail.... like everyone else said, cats adapt to anything!

I was also intrigued to find out that the terminal velocity of a cat is non fatal! so in THEORY I can chuck a cat out of an aeroplane and it should land unscathed....but Im not going to do that cos I would quite happily give my life for that of my cat (i love her to bits!)

I have a young cat called Tripod, for obvious reasons. His mother trapped him under a couch & then pulled him out. His paw was pretty useless, but the owner didn't take him to the vets Shocked

Anyway eventually the mother cat bite his paw off, he was left with a stump, he still wasn't taken to the vets Shocked I took him on & he has been checked over, he is fine & gets around quite well, just can't jump onto the higher surfaces yet. He bullies my 2 4 year old female cats & can hold the 2 dogs away from any food lol

Don't worry too much about your cat, she will be fine & you will be surprised how well she does cope with 3 legs.

My cat was involved in an accident and broke one of his rear legs badly....the vet wired it twice, but the wiring wouldnt hold....so he had it amputated.

I must admit I was pretty shocked when I picked him up from the vets, after the operation....mainly because they had took all of his leg off., and shaved tons of fur off.... it all looked a bit brutal and basic. but actually looked worse than it was.

But the cat was fine and within a couple of days... was doing normal cat stuff. He didnt seem phased by it and adapted really well. One plus point .... his climbing skills are reduced, so that means he doesnt do irritated things like jump on the worktops etc.

He is a happy, playful kitten, the only problem is that he keeps getting stood on as he is always on the floor Embarassed

Cheers for the advice guys. Can I ask how much did the operation cost? I've just been told its gonna cost £700 and thats a helluva jump from the £150 I was initially quoted Shocked I mean I'll do it but its a helluvva jump from £150.

I used to have a 3 legged cat. Her back leg got caught in a bike chain when she was a kitten, we got given her a couple of years later. She was fine, and just as agile as the rest of our cats, but she couldn't scratch herself on one side, so would sit there for hours if you scratched it for her. If you got it right you could make her follow your hand and fall off whatever she was sitting on.

You're thinking of tails.

I had a cat years ago with a stump for a tail, it never grew properly in the womb. We called him TT as he was almost a Manx cat Laughing

My cat was ran over and had to have her tail amputated, she also had her pelvis smashed.

The whole op, including pain killers, 2 wks in with the vets so feed aswell, and having to call out the emergency vet cos it was new years eve cost us £330!

Cheap then - I'd have been expecting a bill in the thousands. It would cost you more than that just to call a plumber on New Year's Eve, never mind have them continue the work for the next two weeks.

Still, it would be far cheaper to get a new cat.

Couldn't agree more. Pets become family.

Depends on the cost, no point being stupid about it.

I think anything over £500 and mine would be going in a bucket of water.

Miaaaow!

Well the wee fella is going in for his op just now. The vet is going to try and save his paw, but if he feels it will reoccur it will get lopped off.

Fingers crossed the wee man is ok.

Well, they've kept him in over night. Unfortunately the vet had to take his paw off. I haven't heard any news so will know better tomorrow if he is ok or not. Fingers crossed.

I hope you meant the leg and not just the paw. The rest of the leg is bugger all use to it if the paw is gone, just gets in the way.

There are a few three legged cats under my care. It usually takes a wee while to twig what's not quite right about them, they cope extremely well.

In fairness, that lump certainly looks like it needed to come off.

I charged about £350 the last time I amputated a limb but that's in rural NW England at a mixed practice. If you are going to a dedicated RCVS accredited small animal hospital in an urban area further south, I would expect you would have to pay a lot more.
