I'm going to take my cbt and bike test hopefully in the next few months (and I am assuming I will pass). I am twenty so looking for a nice little 'learner legal' 125 to get use to the feeling of two wheels before I do the accelerated access thingy. I am not a fan of the little racer rep things so would ideally like a crosser/supermoto style bike.

It will spend most of its life on the road, though I do intent to wonder into the woods every now and then, so I would like something that is pretty good on the acceleration side of things and can cruise pretty well on B-roads and smaller A-roads.

I know this will ultimately come down to a difference of opinions but at the moment I am pretty clueless so any advice will do.

Thanks in advance,

Konrad

dt125r/x is a good starter, had mine for 10 months and clocked up near 12000, not a single problem!

I had the dt125r and it did quite well off road aswell
maxxed out at 80mph, well all I could get out of it anyway and I was near 18 stone at the time

I am in the same boat as you and made the decision to go for the Yamaha DT 125. Heard nothing but good review about them.

If you want to be bored, get the dt 125.

RX125 OR MX125 dont really see what else there is to choose from in the 125 market tbh.

Was in the same boat as you last year and I went for the XR125, never regretted it! Superb bike, has good road presence, not bad acceleration and speed for a 125 - and best of all it's a Honda so has never broken down or given me any prob's!

Thumbs Up

wouldnt recommend an xr to be honest. not very pokey and I guess you could call em boring.. Get a DT125R/RE. 2t 125's are waaaay more fun off road! If you get a DT125X though you wont be able to do much off-road especially when it gets muddy!

Another option is the KMX125, CRM125, DR125 but the DT125R looks way better.. Anything else like CR125,YZ125,KX125 are to much of an off-road bike (think high maintence). They are essentially race bikes so you have to treat them as such! Anything Aprilla avoid!!! They are too highly tuned and you will probably spend more time waiting for bloddy parts than actually riding it! And they are the most expensive 125's to run! Yes they are quick (bloody quick infact!) and they are the better looking than most 125's (USD forks etc) but they just aint any good for a true all-rounder. The MX/RX i belive use the same engine as the RS. Everyone knows what they are like for going bang. The DT uses the same engine as the TZR and everyone knows how much more reliable the TZR is.

Get a DT125R. Seriously they are the best all-rounders. Parts are prob the cheapest compared to Honda, Kawasaki and suzuki, there are tons of parts on ebay for em, they can be had for £1000 (older) upto £1600 for a good nick later model (DT125RE). I personally think the slightly older ones (before 2004) are the better ones. The DT125RE's seem to have a problem with ripping panels off wen you bin them off-roading. My mate with a DT125R never has this problem! Also the newer DT's (04 onwards) dont have kickstarts which is the most stupid thing yamaha ever did to the DT Rolling Eyes You can convert it however but they should never had removed it!

Also another testiment to the DT's is my mate has had at least 6 (currently owns 3 now) and has NEVER had one blow up so dont listen to people who say they always blow up. They blow up when neglected so they are bound to go pop just like any other 2t. Also my bike has done 16k miles and has never let me down (apart from 2 clutch cables snapping and the starter motor going) and thats commuting almost daily (1k miles a month!) with the occasional off road madness once in a while and that in the 18 months Ive had it Smile

Have I convinced you? Mr. Green

Everyone who is braindead yes! One question you need to ask your self is if you cant maintain an mx125 then is a the SM root really the right path for you?

Ive owned an RS for many years and put on plenty of miles without it ever going bang, while ive had 4 strokes that go bang within a lot less miles than the 2 stroke comparision.

Its mearly a myth about the RS/MX being un-reliable.

whats the service interval on an rs/mx.. rings at about 7500-9000 miles? DT/TZR can go on up to like 20k miles. So if your not servicing an RS/MX properly its gonna go bang sooner than a DT/TZR would (in theory)..

Its like any 2t though. Look after it and it will serve you well. Neglect it and what do you expect..

The reason so many people have bad experiences with 125 aprillas is because they are so highly tuned and people dont look after them like they need to be and then they go pop and then they blame it on unreliablility Rolling Eyes

dont hear much bout husky 125's. CR125's are good bikes (As good as a YZ/RM/KX) but they are not a good all rounder. You'll be doing ring changes every like 1k miles etc etc. basically its a competion bike..dont know anything about the SM125.. thats a gilera aint it? That would probably more road tuned but you lose out on the off-road fun and thats the best bit about enduros! 125 are boring on the road..

Look for a CRM125.. they are more enduro (like a DT) and need less service intervals..

For a good all rounder you want to be looking at enduro's and there isnt really that much choice when your after a 125 enduro other than the CRM,DT,KMX (2 strokes) or DR,XLR,XR (4 strokes)

https://www.motorradhandel.ch/kunden_occasionen/1245/12452988401.jpg
theres a CRM125..

basically you can straight away forget YZ,KDX,KX,RMZ,RM,CR or ANYTHING that doesnt come with lights/indicators etc as is gonna be high maintence and the novelty of doing ring/oil changes will very quickly wear off!

Quite right there, I had an MTX for a few months before some thieving cnut nicked it. I had an XR and it was very boring and placid to ride. I have a 91 DT125R now and apart from a few minor electrical faults due to age and corrosion she runs great. The only problem i've found is trying to get parts for her.

DTR 125 - So, so, so, so fucking good build quality.

Get the YPVS engaged = fun!

Honestly, when I rode my DTR everyday/night come rain, snow or shine, it still looked perfect after a year.

Not a thing went wrong and the DEP exhausts look ace!

never had a problem getting parts. The newer RE/X is a little harder since they dont make pattern parts for them yet and there are not so many of them in breakers but the older ones are easy to get spares.. If all else fails (ebay is normally the best place for spares) then the Yam dealers will help you out.

ive ridden my DT daily for the last 18 months and only major headache was a snapped clutch cable. The starter motor has long gone too but ive been bump starting it for the last 6k miles no problem. I will be fitting a kickstart when I do a complete rebuild. You seriously cant fault a DT. They really are the perfect all round 125.. This thread is a testiment to them Mr. Green

Ace bikes. Brings me back to being 17 (wow, at 22 i'm getting all old-man style).

I made profit on mine after a year of riding. Loved that bike! Fantastic build quality. Can't fault yamaha for that one!
