checks when buying a new motorbike

Hi all looking for advice on what to check over on a new bike when i go to pic it up, such as:

should i question if there are say 1 to 2 miles on the dail or something, main parts to check over ect.

Service history
Tyres - Wear/amount of life left
Chain and sprockets - Wear/amount of life left
Exhaust - Cracks/holes
Engine - funny noises/ check that the revs rise and fall easily and quickly
Brakes - check pads and hoses for wear.


Most of it is common sence - think what could be wrong with it and check it and remember If a bikes needs C&S and tires in the near future that is gonna be about £300+ for most bikes.

There round the corner from me good bunch of guys friendly and helpfull, the bike could possible have a few miles on the clock as it has been transprted, I wouldn't have thought it has been thrashed mind as they would be too scared of damaging it. Most bikes come with a 2 year warranty anyway, I would say you have little to worry about getting a bike from there.

But still give it the once over, things can be over looked and riding off with something loose is never good.

It will or should have been transported in a van/lorry if the dealer is any good but may have been taken out for a short road test. Anything over 5miles on the clock and I would be asking questions why.

Check whether the fairings have been put together propperly and that theres no marks on the bodywork. Its usual for a bike to come in a crate with alot of the front end still to attach to save space, so it stands to reason this is the area most likely to get scuffed when its being attached. my bike came with 2 miles on the clock from a trip to fill the tank at the local petrol station.

With there being 24 month warranty dont worry to much about the mechanical side, its purely the fit and finish that you need to look out for, as once you ride it away whos to say that that scratch hasnt been done by you since you left the forecourt.

Best to give it a once over, just in case you`v left the dealership, 10 miles later when your at home giving her her first bath, you find a nice scratch. You`v left the dealers, they could get awkward.
