The builders across the road haven't done ANY work whatsoever on the house they're building for the last 2 months or so, and yet they choose 8.00 on a Sunday morning to start sandblasting, very loudly!

Argh! Twots! Surely that's illegal? Twisted Evil

It probably is. Get in touch with your local planning authority. Although you'll have to wait until tomorrow to do that, and no doubt they'll have finished by then.
If they had to apply for any planning permission you should be able to see the details on your local councils website. You might find any restrictions about building on there. if so tell the builders to stop.

Because some people aren't stupid enough to end up with kids.

Sundays are for bike riding, so the earlier you get up, the more hours you have to play out Laughing

It is illegal. Only emergency works can be carried out at weekends if it involves noise or disruption. Call the council and complain.

I was in bed Til 12 today. It's my choice to lounge til then as I choose to. I dont think they should doin that stuff in an aggravating way at such times, like in summer holidays when 70 yr old Ms Bitch next door wakes you up at 7.30am by mowing the lawn. Rolling Eyes

I'm not planning to sue anyone, or report it either for that matter, I know it won't make the slightest bit of difference and I can understand why they might choose a sunday to do it (less people about), I do live in one of the very few inhabited flats within 500 yards or so of them.

Meh. Ignore me. I'm a grumpy bastard sometimes Laughing

But still. THEY'VE HAD TWO MONTHS. WHY A SUNDAY MORNING?

Ahem:
(lifted from a council website)

"NOISE: CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION
The Control of Pollution Act, 1974 gives the Council's environmental health department special powers to control noise on construction and demolition sites. Working hours can be restricted and conditions enforced on the machinery being used.

Legal responsibilities
Professional building firms must comply with the relevant codes of practice.

Restricted hours
General construction work should be restricted to the following hours:
Monday to Friday – 8am to 6pm
Saturdays – 8am to 1pm
Noisy work prohibited on Sundays/Bank Holidays

Noisy activities include:
* using hand tools - hammers and saws
* using power tools - hand-held tools including drills, saws and sanders
* using plant equipment - such as Kango hammers, pneumatic hammers, cement mixers, large power saws, planers, compressors and generators
* piledriving
* erecting and dismantling of scaffolding
* partition walls - can produce high levels of noise for neighbours.

Avoiding problems caused by building work
Ensure neighbours are given advance warning of any work due to be carried out and let them know how long it will last."

"LARGE CONSTRUCTION SITES: HOURS OF WORK
The main control that the Council can impose on construction sites is to limit the times during which they are permitted to make noise that their neighbours can hear. For general construction works the Council usually imposes (when necessary) the following limits on noisy works:

* Monday to Friday - 8am to 6pm
* Saturdays - 8am to 1pm
* Sundays and Bank Holidays - no noisy activities allowed

Some particularly noisy activities, such as pile driving, may be subject to stricter time controls to allow neighbours some relief from excessive noise.

On the other hand, some activities may be allowed outside of normal working hours when there is a good reason for this to happen. This might be for health and safety reasons or because the particular operation cannot be completed within the time normally allowed.

(this is normally a construction company's "get-out clause", but its likely they would have to apply to the council - and the council should have advised the most adjacent neighbours that the construction company/building owner have applied, so that neighbours can lodge an objection against it if they wish).

When are limits imposed?
The Council usually only imposes time limits on construction sites when they are causing problems for residents. It is, therefore, very important that you let us know if you are being disturbed by noise from construction. Find out how to complain.

Remember, it is not the work that is being restricted, but noise from the work. If the work is not disturbing anyone, then the Council does not need to impose restrictions on that work. This means that quiet work could go on at almost any time of the day."

Hope this helps.

Where did I say I was going to sue anyone, anyway?

I spoke to next door, who do have a young child, and they weren't right impressed with it either, as Sunday is for them (as it is with a lot of people) the only chance for a lie-in all week.

And it was meant with a pinch of salt, why the hell would I be serious about not getting up early on a Sunday morning?
