I live in a very exposed place high up a hill just off the coast so it gets very windy up here. So windy in fact that tiles regularly come off our roof and my bikes have been blown over in the past (I park them next to a wall so they only ever blow onto the wall and not all the way onto the floor).

I've just bought a new bike and it looks mint and I'm planning to keep it that way so I'm toying with the idea of getting a shed to put it in. I originally thought of just getting one big enough to keep the bike in but then I thought why not get one slightly bigger so I can work on it when it's raining (all the time up here).

So a few questions:

Question I see that metal ones are cheaper than wooden ones, are the metal ones rubbish or is it just that wood is more aesthetically pleasing so they command a higher price?

Question Is an 8' x 6' big enough to fit a bike in and work on it? (I'm not talking engine transplants and resprays here, just general maintenance and a bit of tinkering)

Question Is it ok to anchor them into mud and would a metal one be more sturdy than a wooden one? I don't want it to blow away!

I'm looking to spend around £200-250 and I was looking at these kind of things in argos:

Metal one ^^

Wooden one ^^

I live in a rented house so I'm going to have to ask permission from everyone and they're dog before I go ahead with it but if the house was mine I'd just build a garage but unfortunately that's not an option and also there are no rentable garages anywhere near me so I can't get one of those either Sad

Cheers peeps!

Just build one out of 4x4 posts as uprights concreted into the ground,(that way it won,t lift)then clad it in 6"x1" planking .All round .
Set the posts to whatever size you want to fit the bike and build double doors to front ,use T Hinges to hang them from and bolt or hasp on front.
Clad roof in 6x1 then tack green mineral felt over.
Concrete the floor or slab it .
Costs Approx £300 and 4x stonger with specs to suit. Thumbs Up

I'd want 8' x 8' at least, if were going to any work on it. If the bike is 2' wide, that still only gives you 3' each side to move around in. By the time you've added tools, a stool, storage for oil and spares, it'll start getting cramped quickly.

Ah, men and sheds.

My mate Taff has a sulking shed.

I've not been there yet, its quite a male domain (apart from the lovely Mrs Taff, of course) ... but it looks very nice from the pix.
A man should have a shed.

I've recently realised I have room in my back garden for a shed, but I can't get my bike in there cos I have no "alley" to get down into the garden.

But I might get a little shed anyway.
I suppose I could put what's left of the Super Tenere in it
*cries*

I agree. I got an 8x6 shed, and working on my bike in there is a pain, Literally. Personally i'd go for a 10x 8. That gives you plenty of room to put in a hefty shelf/worktop down one side and still have room to move withour having to squeeze past the bike all the time.

Right, thanks for the advice!

I've been in touch with the letting agent and they're coming over to see if they'll let me have a shed so if all goes well I should be shedding it up soon!

No, indeed, I have more than enough of those at present, thank you Rolling Eyes

.. but I still want a shed in me garden Twisted Evil

Sheds get spiders, and if nothing else, men are useful to get the spiders out, innit.
